GTI gets stuck in Gear

Here we go again. Don't mean to hijack this forum but seem to be having issue after issue.

Now the new intake manifold is in the car drives much better and with no rattle but I still have this low rpm stumble when I hold the rpm's at about 1200 rpm. Now I only get this when the clutch is pushed in, as soon as I release the clutch it runs smooth and from my previous threads this would cause the intake manifold to rattle like crazy.


This may not be linked but I've noticed on a few occasions now that when I roll up to lights or to stop and I press the clutch to put it in first for when the lights go green the car will have a little shake for a split second. When this happens and I still have the clutch pressed in it takes some great force to get it out of gear and once out it will not go back in gear unless I let go of the clutch and press it again. I have had this happen in 2nd gear too, I came to a stop left it in second, felt the car shake for a split second and then it took some force to get it out of 2nd and then it wouldn't go back into a gear until I released the clutch and pressed it again.

When driving I have no issues and it doesn't happen all the time.

Any advice would be appreciated.

If I can fix this all my issues will be gone.

Forgot to mention, if I leave it in 1st and not try and take it out the bite point of the clutch feels to be right at the bottom next to the floor rather than half way up the peddle like usual.

Sound like the symptoms I had in my Subaru liberty when the hydraulic clutch hose had a pin hole leak in it from rubbing on a bracket. Fluid leaks out while under pressure and you need to pump again to build it back up. Not sure if the GTI has a hydraulic clutch.

Perhaps some air in the system? - Not really sure to be honest..

I also see you're running a bluefin, stock (original clutch) fitted? Do you do the odd spirited drive/launch by any chance?

P.S: Also worthwhile to mention that it's 'benefical' to come up to a rolling stop in 2nd and when rev's get low clutch in - stop car completely - engage 1st.

Thanks mate, my mechanic thought air in the system but would like to see if any body else has had this. No serious launching but don't mind a quick start sometimes. Clutch is less than a year old but it wasn't a genuine VW I put in, it was the same clutch but not from VW. If I roll to a stop in 2nd it also happens, I need more force to get it out of 2nd and won't go into any other gear until I release the clutch and press it again.

If clutch has been replaced first thing I would be doing defiantly would be bleeding the clutch then, it's a cheap procedure to do and can eliminate alot of things, e.g: leaks etc. Also so is the clutch you put in genuine or a 'good name brand' ? Could possibly be a clutch fault but quite odd if it's taken this long (I presume 6+ months?) to show up... When the clutch was replaced was a clutch kit replaced or just the clutch? Clutch kit = Throw out bearings, clutch plate, pressure plate etc.

What was done to the flywheel when the new clutch was fitted? If not air in the system or anything else really obvious (MK6 GTI clutches from memory are 'self adjusting' - so shouldn't be a adjustment problem) I'd also be suspicious then of the clutch kit itself, e.g: faulty component, or perhaps even 'slightly incorrect alligned clutch/pressure plate which could cause many problems including but not limited to: clutch chatter, hard gear changes, etc etc.

Think I'll go for a bleed first and see how that goes. It seems as though I'm losing no fluid and my mechanic wants to get it sorted as he's a mate of mine and knows that the warranty for the clutch runs out in November. Think the clutch is just a copy of some sort, the supplier has many products for VW and Audi just not genuine products. Not sure what came in the clutch kit but think the throw out baring clutch plate and pressure plate were all in the kit. Fly wheel was not touched. As far as noises go we can't here none and we can't make it do it sat still, it only happens when I'm driving and then it's only now and again.

Don't need to lose fluid to have air in the lines mate. Defiantly get it sorted before the warranty runs out, seems more like a clutch issue.. Sounds like you've gone with a no brand name clutch / cheapy? What condition was the flywheel in when clutch was replaced? Personally I stay away from 'no name clutch' due to the PITA of replacing it in the first place then if something goes wrong...

Beginning to regret trying to save a few dollars on a clutch. Think I only saved $300. If they do open it up again I'm going to put the fly wheel in too while they are there.

Does the pedal feel ok?

I've replace a few clutch master cylinders in Golf 5s and 6s.

Yep, personally would never cheap out on a clutch because I know that alot of the times they are very poor quality and any 'warranty' issues with them are near impossible! Best to get from a VW dealer (will be abit pricey but obviously the quality and warranty is there) or try places like ECS tuning - very good quality parts but shipment wait time not sure if that will be an issue for you. If this issue does appear to be with the clutch, that $300 you 'saved' can be kissed goodbye as 'parts warranties' only cover the part itself and not the labour to remove and refit, so hopefully your mechanic is nice to you or else you'll probably be charged, which is not 'unfair' of your mechanic, but abit of a bummer for you. Anyway whatever happens I do hope it all gets sorted for you! Need any assistance I'm a PM away, noticed your are in Brisbane so not too far.
