Windsceen washer motor frozen .

Drove our older T5 [2004} today and went to wash the screen lots of wiper action but no fluid . Pulled down the inner guard and removed the pump , tested and it would not spin . Went down to Repco and found replacement unit non genuine for $44 fitted back into place only mod was to the connector just removed the VW plug and fitted two female connectors and all works well . Then decided to pull the old one apart to see what was wrong BUGGER it was rusted as hell strange when you consider how waterproofed the unit is supposed to be , any way gave it a gentle tap to remove the rust around the base and then put a few drops of oil on the shaft . Grabbed the shaft with some pliers and gently tuned it lo and behold it started to turn again , connected it to a jump pack and it started to run like a charm again Oh well at least I now have a spare one in case one of the others rust up in our other vans ! Not sure if the genuine VW one was any dearer or cheaper but saw a few on the net from around $25 from Hong Kong or $65 from the US .

The left fog lamp ( on my 2008 Multi) stopped working some time back and I thought it needed a new bulb. When I pulled the lamp out, the internal reflector part and back of lamp was actually broken and separated and I have absolutely no idea how!

Also my windscreen washer stopped working, so I also pulled this out and soaked the outlets and suction end in hot soapy water for a while and it freed it up again for the motor to start spinning again. Put it all back together, and it started spraying front and back windows at the same time! I then realised that before soaking the pump end, I had poked some wire though the pump outlets to try and unblock, and had stuffed it by putting a hole through the internal barrier between the two outlets. So if your washer pump stops working, it is worth soaking the outlets and pump end in a cup of very hot soapy water for a while - but don't put protruding objects in the outlets to unblock!

So when I rang the dealer to price two new parts, $250 for the pump and $150 for a replacement left fog lamp! I said thanks but no thanks and proceeded to look on line. After comparing various online part numbers and various suppliers, I managed to locate the exact replacement for the lamp (Hella) and a Hella branded washer pump (the equivalent to the original). A total of $AUD147 delivered from a firm in Germany with excellent service (see link- difficult to find on a Google Search.)

Like I said the non genuine one exactly the same pipes and pick up even came with a new grommet $44 I only had to fit two female connectors onto the original wiring loom [thirty seconds work ] and job done $250 from VW what a rip off . Thanks for the link .

Cheers Sunny. Not sure if your one is a duel outlet for front and rear washers, but I would need to check the split on the invoice; could have been about $60 roughly.

Either way for anybody with this problem, it is definitely worth soaking it in a cup boiling water for about 5 minutes to desolve/unblock any debris to see if the motor will start spinning again as a first step, before forking out for a new one.

Just checked prices and yes ours was a dual pump same as VDO but from that site with freight was AU $100 . I would imagine it would not make sense to just order that part as the freight was only $8 less than the price of the part . If ordering more than one part the freight would be worthwhile for several parts in the one order .

It may be also worth trying a solution of hot water and "CLR". Let it soak for 10 and try to rotate the shaft, repeat till it moves easily

Our Pump was not frozen in the actual pump it self but the actual motor was rusty , I was standing in the Repco store while the salesgirl was checking stock and realised with a bit of effort the top plastic part could be separated and the the motor was just lifted out . From the look of it I thought the rust was so bad it would be rusty and corroded inside . As I said a drop of oil and a light tap on the rusty base it worked again .

Mine was sealed unit.

I think you will find that it looks sealed but with a bit of a tilt at the top it suddenly comes apart .And ours is a VDO .
