Skoda Octavia Wagon or Golf Wagon

Hello everyone, I am think of getting my wife either the Skoda Octavia Wagon in the Ambition Plus trim with tech pack or the Golf Wagon 90TSI Comfortline with bi-xeon headlights.

These two should be within $1000 of each other and would not want to spend more than that. So I would like to know if anyone has been through or going through the same process of trying to decide between the two?

I have test driven the Octavia in that exact trim and loved the engine and the equipment level, but feel a bit let down by not having reverse camera in today's market. And I think the interior to be very good especially the steering wheel.

I have not test driven the Golf as yet but for those who have driven both, do you think the 90TSI will be a bit behind the 103TSI in terms of going uphill and carrying load?

I know that the Octavia has a torsion beam in the rear and the golf has multi-link, I am currently driving Mazda 3 MPS with 18" wheels and sport suspension and I found that the Octavia was quite comfortable so I am not sure if the multi-link will wow me. But VW is more established in Australia and has a better re-sale value...

Anyway, looking forward to hear your opinion and why you pick one over the other, cheers!

To the OP: You'll get a biased view posting in the Octy area :-)

For a family runabout I doubt you'll notice the difference in the power outputs but is the torque similar as that is what gets you up hills without the gearbox dropping back a gear or two. Is the 103tsi the twincharge engine? If so, stay away as it's a lottery if you get a good one or not. 90tsi seem to get consistently good reports. Both are DSG7 so that's a shame.

Agree regarding the multi-link/beam comparison - unless you are driving fairly quick. I like to go fast around corners but I don't think the beam axle would be a show-stopper.

If your worried about brand name acceptance then walk away from Skoda right now because VW AUS will never let the brand florish. They consistantly make small tactical errors to ensure that sales will remain fairly stagnant. Resale is a different matter & apart from anecdoatl evidence I've yet to see somebody take a bigger bath on a Skoda than they would have on an equivalent VW.

I x-shopped Skoda & VW when I bought & when I did a comparison of features & inclusions the Octy crapped all over the equivalent Golf & was a few thousand cheaper. You might be surprised at what the Golf is missing if you do an item by item comparison of the spec sheets.

Pricing difference might be $1k on paper but in reality you'll probably get 5%-8% off RRP for the Octy if you can bargain. VW might be a bit more intractable.

You should be able to add an OEM RVC camera as an option & if you are handy it should be a DIY.

If it was a choice between MK2Octy & MK7 Golf I'd go with the Golf but the MK3 Octy ticks all the boxes for me so that would be my pick.

Cheer Brad. The Octy 103TSI is the same engine as that in the golf 103TSI Highline, just turbo charged.

I know i will get biased opinion here, that's why I have posted the same question in the Golf page :)

It will be my wife's car so I doubt she'll go around corner really fast haha.

The MK3 Octy does have a very comprehensive of features, like reversible boot mat and those corner pieces with velcro, how clever. And it might sound strange, I prefer the layout of the air vents in the Octy haha.

Haha! I'm so mixed with it. I love my manual at the moment but on those really tired afternoons or evenings sitting in traffic I sit and wonder...how nice a DSG would be. It doesn't happen often but when it does I just sigh and ponder...hahaha

I dont think there are any manuals in australia are there? I havent seen any, and dealers dont seem to be sharing stock. If There was a manual ambition+ wagon in oz, i'd buy it now!

ur right, vw did up the game on the mk7 golf wagon. my mk2 liftback even had more space than the previous mk6 wagon!!!

mk7 golf wagon = 602L / 1620L
mk3 octavia wagon = 588L / 1718L

mk6 golf wagon = 505L / 1495L
mk2 octavia wagon = 580L / 1620L

Really annoying that the points of difference between the 2 marques are being eroded away.
