Catalytic Converter warning lamp.

Hi all,

We had a warning lamp come on yesterday in the Tiggy (103 TDi), and according to the manual it's the Catalytic Converter warning lamp. For some reason I was under the impression diesels didn't have CC's, but apparently they do - show's the limit's of my mechanical expertise!

Any one got an idea of what the problem may be, and should we be OK to drive it over the weekend until we can get it looked at?

The car is just over 2 years old, with around 25000 k's. Obviously it's still under warranty, so whatever the issue is hopefully it'll be covered.

On the question of warranty, do I need to take it to a dealer if it's a warranty claim? We get it serviced at Mike Webber's normally, it would be much easier for us if we could take it to him.

Was it a yellow light of a thing that looks like a muffler with a few dots in it? Any accompanying message on the MFD?
If so, then Diesel Particulate filter warning. lights for a number of reasons. Sometimes the filter is blocked and hasn't gone through the self clean for some reason. In my case the DPF pressure sensor downstream failed. Common fault apparently.

Get it sorted ASAP.

Any DPF fault that isn't rectified straight away can have adverse effects on the DPF itself.

Quick update. We rang Mike Webber, they said to bring it in and they'd have a quick look. They put it on the diagnotic computer, and said it was caused by a blocked DPF. They cleared the fault and suggested we take it for a long drive to burn off the DPF.

The warning light came back on a couple of weeks later, and we ended up taking it to the dealer. They found a faulty sensor, and replaced it under warranty. So far so good, no more warning lights.

That's why you should have taken it to the dealer in the first place, then you wouldn't have had it "fixed" twice !! Just clearing the fault isn't "fixing" anything !!
