Mk3 Golf 2.0 fuel pump relay

Hi all, new member here :)

I'm having an issue with my '98 mk3 Golf GL 2.0 (manual), which I've heard/read is likely to be a fault with the fuel pump relay (engine sometimes stalls when coming to a stop).

My question is, does anyone know what part number I need, or even which relay (number or position) is the fuel pump relay? I've spoken to Autobarn, Repco, and a VW dealer, and none of them have yet been able to find the part number, even with my VIN as reference (I was especially surprised the dealer couldn't find it).

These things don't seem too expensive, I just want to pick one up and put it in so I can see if the problem stops. Any help would be much appreciated.

I believe not 100% sure though that the fuel pump relay is the relay on the bottom right. If you get it out the part number should be on it. Might wanna wait for someone to confirm it first though as I'm not certain.
191 906 383 - That should be part number for fuel pump relay. Just found that on google so again you might wanna double check

It's the one with "167" printed on the top of it.

just checked vagcat.com & German Auto Parts and the number checks out. Locally they could be dear though.

Thanks so much guys, that's exactly the information I needed. Everything seems right: the relay located at the bottom right was labelled "167", and has the part number "191906383C".

I pulled it out after parking the car, and the relay was quite hot to touch. It also has some physical damage on the casing, so I suspect a mechanic working for the previous owner has tried to loosen up the relay him/herself. I opened it up, and can't find anything obviously wrong with it, but I'll make a few calls tomorrow to see if I can source a new one locally.

check with Volkspower on 9808 6777 as they might have one ready to rock. They are at Burwood so postage might not kill you unless you head north for a quick drive.:rolleyes:

i had the same problem, and bought a Narva one for about $8 and and now....no problems.... apparently the Fuel Pump Relays made in Portugal (black ones) were the problem....

I made a few calls today:
- The local VW dealer has the relay for $75
- Volkspower have the same part for $41.80 (yes, genuine and new)
- Repco couldn't find any match in their system. Neither could Autobarn, but the guy suggested I bring the old relay in to find an aftermarket match, which I think might be the best option
- A seller in the US on eBay has an aftermarket version which, depending on shipping, should be about $14

Is it normal for the dealer to be the most expensive, even for a genuine part? I know aftermarket would generally be cheaper, but for a genuine part to be cheaper at Volkspower than directly from VW seems a bit odd to me. I guess a lot of people wouldn't bother looking elsewhere, so they can basically charge what they want, and rely on people's fear of ruining their warranty or their car if they dare to go elsewhere... Sorry, a bit of a rant there.

Narva makes a suitable VW prong one i got from Bursons, you probably wont find one in supercheap or autoone etc as its rare ish in VW prong

Hey mattross, I had a good look through the Narva catalogue yesterday, and couldn't find any relays with the right pin pattern in there. Any chance you've got a model number for the one you found?
