Few mods Golf GTI MKV - Need recommendations and help

Hey guys,

I'm looking to mod my Golf GTI Mark V.
It's about 3.5yrs old.

Looking to get:
1. ECU
2. CAI
3. Diverter Valve
4. Lowered

ECU - I'm thinking APR.
CAI - I'm thinking APR also, or would K&N do as well? Which is better? Cheaper?

DV - I don't mind the APR one but don't know what kind of sound it makes, I really want that flutter noise lol. Can I get any of these things cheaper elsewhere?

Lowering - Have no idea what I need to do here or how much it will cost, planning to use the stock 17" rims.

Any help / advice is appreciated.

Hi - good to hear that you are wanting some more power out of the GTI. Like most turbocharged cars, there are significant gains to be had from a simple tune, let alone supporting modifications like intake / exhaust etc.

Upgrading the diverter valve to the new style one is a good idea, as the older design which are fitted to the Mk5's are prone to leaking / failing etc. I replaced one on my friends Mk5 GTI a month or so ago - the red rubber part had ripped and was giving an error code. He also said the car felt like it was down on power. You can get new ones here >> VW 2.0T OEM Upgraded Piston Diverter Valve - $99.95 : Dub Ad·dic·tion [duhb uh-dik-shuhn]

As for your tune, APR are amongst the most expensive option around, and you can get the same results from some of the other tuners. Personally I'll recommend DNA Tuning as that's who I have, they provide 1 on 1 service and a very strong tune. My car made 204kw at the dyno day last weekend. Custom Code also have some strong tunes and good service. Both of these tuners are sponsors on this forum so look them up in the sponsor section. You could get one of these tunes + a new intake for the price of just the APR tune.

With intakes, there are quite a few options for the Mk5 GTI. The Forge Wintake and Twintake are popular choices. Depending on our budget you might consider the GruppeM or VW Racing intake. The APR Carbonio (and the GruppeM for that matter) are what I would class as a "semi intake". They look pretty and may assist with slightly better airflow, but the air still travels through the restrictive engine cover - which limits their effectiveness and also means they are essentially no louder than the stock intake.

I wouldn't bother with a Milltek imo. Overpriced and average quality compared to custom made stuff. I got a custom TBE made up with JunBl for $1,800 fitted. The finish of the JUNBL makes the Milltek look cheap.

Hey guys,

After much thought, I'm pretty much going with APR ECU and APR Carb intake. I know they are prob not the best and charge a fair bit but a dealer is right next to my place, spoken to the guy and he seems to know his stuff so will get my car serviced from him in the future too.

Where can I get a Forge DV and Spacer? What model number should I be getting?


Decided not to get an exhaust done this time around as it provides minimal KW gains (awesome sound though).
