Mine did the same thing last week mate and I did the same as you. Now I know the process is to let it do its thing.
The fans will run on for an extended period of time under certain conditions, such as drive time, ambient temperature, and coolant temperature. The idea is to stop the car boiling itself once there's no coolant circulation when the engine is switched off.
Australian Delivered cars are fitted with this feature, if the Oil/Water temps are above a certain level the car will keep the cooling fans running after you park the car to help cool down the engine. They run for about 5 minutes or so, it's normal, don't worry about it. It won't send your battery flat or anything like that.
Correct. If the battery voltage is affected, the fans will be shut off.
i hope i didnt damage anything when i turned car on and off just to shut the fan..at-least now i know though. Thanks fellas!
Mine surprised me too the first time it did this at around the 1000km mark. In my case I am sure it was due to a DPF regen, as there was an obvious smell of burning exhaust paint at the same time due to the high temperature of the DPF. It has happened a few times since (at similar intervals) and the burning paint smell has now diminished. Just let it happen!
Up here in Brisbane, especially in summer, the fan will kick on for 5 minutes or so on a regular basis.
It's a surprise the first time but you get used to it.
