Cruise Control in S mode - Issues??

I've been having some issues with my 2011 GTi when driving in S mode and activating cruise control.

When driving in S mode and activating cruise, the car seems to revert back to D mode temporarily, which is fine. However, when trying to accelerate a few times my car has lost all power and I've had to cancel cruise control at the switch and change back to D mode to be able to accelerate again.
I'm not sure whether this is because D goes up to 7th gear, whereas S only goes to 5th then up to 7th if in cruise (generally I use cruise freeway driving).
Is it not recommended to use cruise when in sports mode??

It's called S-mode for a reason...and highway driving on cruise control is not considered sports driving. I certainly won't be attempting to flick the switch in S-mode.

I have to agree. How are you 'cruising' in sports mode. Leave it in drive in my opinion.

The thing is it reverts to drive when placed in cruise
