Damaged Paint - detailing problems?

Hey guys,

After recently getting my car, I seem to have developed the addiction of everyone else here; to have a perfectly clean car :banana:

I have been reading through this section and i have wanted to get my car detailed by a professional as i dont trust myself with a machine polisher just yet. However i am hesitating as i have some damage to my paints. the previous owner was a country driver.. and there are what i assume stone chips?

So.. those show a couple.. they seem pretty deep and i just want your opinion on whether i need to paint these in and wet sand it down then get it polished with the rest of the car... sort of looks like they would just be polished larger XD

There was a previous thread in which someone had black spots on their car, I believe i had the same, was there any solution? They can be taken off if they are rubbed hard/repeatedly but i believe this isnt good, plus there is still some black left. It looks like dirt solidified after not being cleaned for a year and is stuck to the paint. Would polishing help wear away at these mounds

The chips should not get any larger with polishing but fixng them up before polishing would be best. Be careful if you use a gurney to clean your car though, that is when stone chips can become bigger.

As for the black stuff, it looks like tar.

I would use a dedicated tar remover followed by a clay bar if there is still some marks left. I can't recomend one as I have not had to use it, I'm sure someone can recomend one.

If you do get it professionally detailed they should get rid of it for you.

AG Tar and Adhesive Remover will get rid of the tar marks etc on the paint. I would recommend to get the car professionally done or machined by yourself maybe could be the other option to bring the paint back to its optimal condition.

As well as sealing off with a wax or sealant at the end..

+1 on the claybar, just makesure that the area around it is clean and only the stubborn marks are left (otherwise you'll pickup the other dirt and scratch the finish). Just be gentle when you use the claybar, no need to push down hard and knit the clay often.

I've used Meguiars and Mothers claybars and they seem to be a tiny bit harder (to knit) but removes the contaminates fairly well, just have to take care. I'm currently using a Japanese 3M one (blue) that's a little softer and does the job just as well. Always work under a good light so you can see if any scratches occur. Mind you, once you've used a claybar on one spot, you will continue to do the rest of the car cos the finished result is a smooth as glass finish.

As for the stone chips, on my car I just use the factory touch up paint to very carefully cover the hole (cheaper than a respray), won't look as nice but mine's a daily driver and stone chips are a part of driving unfortunately. Or you can try one of those chipaway or touchup guys but don't know about the result as I never used one.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll definitely try the tar remover.. Didnt even know they existed. Yeh was thinking of claying my car.. And need to buy a few more products so I'll might chuck you through a pm CCP for some advice when I find the time
