6speed DSG maximum torque

Hi Guys, been thinking about this for a while but cannot get any reliable data. With all the goodies comming out for the 170ps diesel's, what do you theorise is a safe torque level?

Currently my OctyII 2.0 TDI RS has a factory listed 350nm, now bluefin and Ottenger say they can increase this with a stage 1 tune to the ~420nm mark, and thats without any other mods :banana:

I have a 6 speed DSG, what do you think is an acceptable torque level? My tires already are fairly happy to break traction with the OEM tyres, so is the torque concept a mute point unless you start going in for semi-slicks of the clubsport level?

My understanding is that the DSG will limit engine torque to about 380nm to protect itself. Apparently you can "chip" the DSG to enable the torque limit to be raised to 550nm. This entails lifting the clutch pressures to ensure there is no slippage. The word is that DSG boxes have run 550nm without problems once re-tuned.

If you ask most tuners they will quote maximum torque for the DSG 125KW motor at 380nm but the max power is unchanged compared to the manual. This is because the max torque arrives fairly low in the rev range and then diminishes as the revs rise and is less than 380nm at max power.

I will be having the DSG tune done when I have the DPF delete performed not because I want the full torque output (it will be fun though) but mainly because I want to protect my clutches.

OP - if you are looking fore "reliable" data, then this forum wont get you anywhere. Ask the same question about an 020 gearbox (that began in Golfs in the late 70's and stopped in the late nineties) and you still wont get a reliable number.

Transmissions are highly overengineered bits of kit for which you wont be readily able to find a specific "breaking torque". The frequency and style of abuse is far more important to the life of any transmission. As craigy suggests the clutch will slip before the transmission breaks.

I suggest that anyone in the right frame of mind would have no problem successfully applying much more torque through a 6 speed DSG than you will easily acheive with a 4 cylinder diesel engine - just as anyone with a detuned VW diesel could break the same transmission if they were so inclined.

Therefore, a "safe torque" is just about as variable a number as is the IQ of the driver.
