RE: Tyre Rotation

Hi All,

Looking to rotate the wheels every 3mths and was after some advice.

Vehicle: 2007 VW Passat 2.0T FSI
Drive Wheels: FWD
Wheels: OEM Dunlop SP Sport 01 235/45R17 97W (Asymmetric)

Please note these tyres are Non-Directional, they say OUTSIDE on the tyre wall and do not have an arrow with ROTATION direction on the sidewall.

Please give me your thoughts on the following rotation pattern;

Left Front to Right Rear (LF - RR)
Right Front to Left Rear (RF - LR)
Left Rear to Left Front (LR - LF)
Right Rear to Right Front (RR - RF)

Please give me your thoughts on the above.

Although in the end I'm not sure how much it matters, The Car Bible (http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.html#rotating) recommends almost the opposite.

The way I figure it, through the life of the tyre, as long as the tyre ends up running at a different corner every 5000 to 8000km's, it's wear will be evened out.

I have a Tiguan which is a strange beast. It switches between AWD (50/50 split of power between front and back) and near-FWD (90% Front, 10% back) while you drive through the Haldex clutch. So should I be rotating as if it's an AWD (FR<->BL, FL<->BR) or a FWD (FR->BL,FL->BR, BL->FL, BR->FR)? Who knows? But then again, who cares coz in the end we're trying to achieve even wear, so as long as you stick to a particular rotation pattern you should be good.

Every 5000kms my GTI gets an oil and filter change, and a tyre rotation.

Fronts go directly to the back, whilst the rears go diagonally to the front. Perfectly even tyre wear and this also stops the tyre running in the same direction for its whole life, thus reducing tyre roar.

Stuwey, thanks for your input mate.
It looks like from what was in the car bible above, I have been mislead and looks like what I wrote above is for RWD vehicles and not FWD.

From what you said, it is for FWD vehicles.
Looks like I will give this a go!

Back in the day from day 1 , when we saw most of them in the dealerships, we would bring the spare into the mix too, and spread the wear over the 5 and not the 4. I know things have changed a bit now with SSavers etc but with cars that have full sized spares and same tyres why wouldnt you? Dubs and Audis tend to saw tooth a bit at the rear and would advise regular rotate and balance, around 5000ks and what some have mentioned above is fair. This will minimise the saw toothing, some of which i have seen lately have been shocking and the tyre shops put them on the front:eek: Adds a nice characteristic to the steering and the hum / drone is still there!!!!
