Hi Welcome :)
Find out if and when the cambelt was done and if all the fluids have been changed and obviously take it for a test drive make sure it pulls smoothly and gears change smoothly as well. I think that's about it really. I'm sure others will advise if I've left anything out.
Hi mate, welcome to the forum!
There are a few things to check on the Golfs - timing belt is due every 4yrs / 60000km as mentioned above & water pump may have been changed too.
Check the electric windows (if it's got them) all go up & down without any clunking - the brackets are prone to breaking and the window can fall down into the door. Not a big issue to fix though.
Occassional gearbox issues in these as well - check the service history if it's available or give it a good test drive. Not sure which engine is in the GLE but presumably the auto box would be the same.
Good luck
thanks guys its the 2L version of the GLE and it has full history, plus the belt was changed at 90000 18months ago.
Thanks guys sounds like the only thing to worry about is the gear box :D
Check the dipstick... The 2L engines are known to use oil in certain circumstances ( like when they are driven ). lots.At least a good majority my buddy VW mechanic has seen.
Make sure the idle is nice and smooth, no hicups, as the MAF sensor is prone to go also on the 2L engine...
The only good engines these came with was the 1.8, turbo or non turbo... In Mk4 flavor I mean. If you can score one of the 1.8, you'll be suprised how much better they are.
I fixed both windows left and right fronts on mine, easy fix for 100 per side (parts only) if you are handy; otherwise expect over 300 per side at dealership.
The gearbox is weak on the 1.6, I thought the 2L has the different stronger gearbox ; need to ask my buddy ... Anyone ?
All in all they are still a pleasant, smooth and quiet car to drive, although as far as I am concerned I am still left with a sour taste after owing one, I am happy to have sold it... But your mileage may vary...
Good luck whichever way you go; if you need a (free) VAG com scan for error codes message me, got a licensed copy of 409 and a cable :)
Just saw your location , Perth? Doh, ignore my offer of VAG com , I won't come there soon :)
Thanks thats really helpful, i wish i was in Melb! how do i tell if the sensor is broke when driving? and do you repair or replace how much is it worth? would you choose the 1.6 over the 2.0?
No, I would not choose the 1.6, I had it and it is really bad... As I said, my buddy said the only engine he would buy is the 1.8 from the series, but I think they stopped making them about 1999 or 2000, and continued only 1.6 and 2.0L.
Golf88 - is it a private sale or dealer? You might be able to get Golfwagen (up in Wangara) to scan the ECU with VAGCOM to see if there are any fault codes etc recorded before purchase??? or an RAC inspection maybe.
