Contemplating Cold-Air and Supercharging

Hi all.
I've put about a thousand k's on the diesel cabriolet and so far i'm pretty happy with how it's running. It has plenty of go around town and is happy at freeway speeds with lower fuel consumption and my bet would be less emissions than a prius when i run biodiesel.

The only time i'm really lack power is on steep hills when i havent built up speed before hand. It seems to be a bit out of the torque band and struggles to keep up.

So i've had an idea. Put the intake manifold off the JH petrol engine on which removes the panel filter and gets the air intake away from the top of the engine. I could run a cold air intake down to beside the radiator, put a pod filter on and maybe even an electric supercharger. What are peoples thoughts. Will the JH manifold fit and what other issues am i likely to have?

manifold will fit no probs, but be warned that there are .5mm holes in hte base of the intake for lubrication of the intake valve seats on the diesel which you dont get on the petrol, so by some miraculous act you might cause yourself a problem one day. i very much doubt it.

anything you can do to give it more air will help. i dunno about the electric supercharger...no experience...

a decent exhaust helps (but is loud on mk1 diesel, no turbo to quiet it down) 2" is good size.

but yeah, lots of air will do a world of good.

you could grab a cheap turbo and manifold and wack it on. couple of ppl have got the 1.9td setups for sale. unsure how you would account for that with the fueling. i think you can just wind the pump up cant you ?

who have the 1.9 td setups for sale?

i think beau and matt both have some manifold etc for sale. there is also a setup on ebay i think .

Yeah I have a TD manifold and turbo for sale off a TD, or TDI. Its a good turbo, pm me any offers if interested.

electric supercharger equals crap, its just like a heater fan lol, plus the added power will be offset the same or more on your poor little alternator dragging to provide the current.

If we could put a turbo on the CK diesel, we would.. Fact is, the compression ratio of 23.5:1 is a bit high for us to be compressing the charge by any significant amount, and if you're only running 4 or 5 psi, then a turbo is an expensive piece of gear for that tiny amount of boost..

So brom is on the right track: Make it breathe better, and you'll notice a difference. I'm not sure what an electric charger would do though..
