DSG Gearbox “gripping”

Hi All,

I have a 2013 Polo TSI with auto transmission. Done about 75,000kms.

Ive noticed what I would describe as a “gripping” or even “slipping” when I am towards the end of a gear change on gears 4 and above. It starts when that particular gear is under load but I wouldn’t say it’s failing to shift down a gear.

When its in in sports mode and the revs are higher it doesn’t happen.

Any thoughts? If I don’t drive too hard or avoid getting stuck in a higher gear up a hill for instance I can avoid it happening but I need to get it looked at.

Could my my local mechanic assist or does these need to go to VW?

First of all the transmission might appear to be an automatic, but VW use a DSG transmission which is basically a manual transmission with 2x clutches and 2x gearsets and a computerised brain which does all of the work for you.

What you are feeling is more than likely the clutches shuddering as they are very well known for, especially so in the particular gearbox your Polo uses. The clutches overheat and burn out in heavy traffic and then start to shudder and slip.

Take it to either an independent VW specialist mechanic or VW themselves. Dont go to a regular mechanic as they wont have a clue what they are doing and will send the gearbox to a specialist anyway.

Where in Sydney are you? Might be able to send you to a good independent VW specialist mechanic based off what part of the city you live in.

The early small 7 speed wet clutch DSG’s are notorious for clutch judder and burning out.

Perhaps you actually mean the early DQ200 DRY clutch boxes as you rarely see of any problems with wet clutches

My bad the 7 speed DSG Which I believe is the DQ200e which is the crap gear box is as you say dry clutch. I had a 2012. Golf 1.4 twin pump DSG with terrible clutch judder between first and second gear after 300 miles, eventually sorted after six months in the dealers. They did about 3 gearbox oil tests, a new mechatronic unit which took 2 months to arrive. Then VW agreed it was the clutch pack, this issue was known world wide. I rejected the car and bought a DSG Tiguan (DQ500) which we never had a problem with in the five years of ownership. I was taking my mother in-laws 14 plate 1.4 DSG polo to work to do a service and MOT on when the clutches let go on the M20 causing the front wheels to lock up and luckily put me into the hard shoulder. It actually destroyed the gear box and she had only had the car for six months. I have also had some experience with the DQ200 6 speed, first one a 2004 Golf TDi DSG which melted the clutch on the Queen Elizabeth bridge M25 at 39000 miles but out of warranty. Then I bought a 2008 VW Eos 2.0 TSI DSG in 2011, I had to take that back to the dealers to have a new mechatronic unit under warranty, I never had a problem with it after that. Would I have another DSG! Well I have had four more, a 2008 Passat TDi, another Eos 2.0 TDI DSG 2010, a Mk2 2.0 petrol DSG Tiguan and a 2013 Audi 2.0 TFSi Quattro Sline DSG convertible. The last two I still own and have no issues with, when they are working as they should you can’t find a better gearbox better on economy and performance than you could ever get with a manual.
