Aftermarket head unit MK6

Hi all,

After a lot of deliberation I have decided on removing the OEM head unit as it does not have a reverse camera. Yes for some that is not a huge deal but it’s an option I became accustomed to in previous vehicles.
The badge camera is great but costs more than I want to spend, and do not think the head unit is compatible with an aftermarket reverse camera, unless I am wrong?

If I could fit an aftermarket camera to the head unit, I would probably not bother replacing it.

As far as aftermarket options go, I was looking something like the Kenwood DMX8018S 7 Inch.

Look forward to responses to those who have fitted an aftermarket head unit and whether or not you can fit an aftermarket camera to the rns510?

Have you considered the imitation OEM flip-out reversing cameras from eBay/Aliexpress? Something like this:

I think you can also get cheap adaptors that let you plug generic reversing cameras into an RNS unit, but haven't looked into it myself - could be worth a search?

I did consider that idea but wondered if the quality would be any good? Didn’t know it could be used on the RNS510. That does kind of change things.

No problem! FWIW my parents drove a Mk6 with an factory-fitted OEM reversing camera, and the quality was pretty terrible - so I don't think it could be much worse. My impression of most of those Aliexpress/eBay parts is that they're either made from the same schematics as the factory parts, or they're actually genuine parts that are being sold at wholesale prices; I've bought heaps of claimed 'genuine' VW parts from Aliexpress, from head units to EVAP valves, and they all seem to hold up fine. Your mileage may vary, of course...

I have a genuine camera that I have just replaced from a Mk6. PM me if interested. I also have an MDI kit that I can offer as well.

I've been thinking of doing the same. But the kit to fit an aftermarket headinit is fairly expensive if you have a Dynaudio, especially if you have the Blaupunkt amp.
