Are my rims legal?
Evening
Long time Lerker first time poster I'm trying to work out if my 17x8 rims are victorian legal! I'm new to this stupidly went out and brought some nice rims however as I understand I can go 1inch wider than the widest stock rim, and 15mm bigger or smaller rolling diameter. Wheel-size.com is saying the largest stock rim for a 1.8l polo gti is 17x7. I'm really confused should I put my stocks on and sell these new rims or are they victorian legal?

It's probably going to come down to the offset of the wheel - how far in or out of the guards they sit.
If they are a conservative offset (+35 - +50) I would say you should be fine and unless you were being a complete douche on the road and managed to get pulled over. Offset should be stamped on the inside of the wheel.
I'm from NSW and I hear it's a bit more relaxed up here (supposedly) so maybe a fellow Victorian can chime in....

There fine as long as the don't pop out past the wheel arches.
The biggest stock is 17x7 and you can go 1 inch wider which is 17x8

They are 35mm offset, tyre tred isn't past the guard rim spokes and tyre stick out past the guard not by much mabe 5mm iv got a straight edge will check this today

Cheap chinese imports from an Australian company with quite possibly the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my hole life the rims are avid av32's
Iv called volkswagon assist then to volkswagon weribee, they have said my cars been imported from izrael and that only 16x6.5 is the largest rim however that's not what my placard is saying. They got this info after I gave them my Vin it's news to me! Iv found it very difficult finding out from various places infomarion about the largest stock rim/tyre size how would I explain this to an officer or even insurence if something was to happen never the less I'm going to keep the rims for now as they are great!

The officer if you get pulled over will look at your vin plate
17,s is fine and 1 inch over the max size the car came with is legal as for rolling diameter its plus or minus 15mm over the largest/smallest tyres fitted to the car as stock
Thats the legal/able to be registered required for insurance with racv that i am with
I know cause i went up a inch in rim size and brought them before i knew the ins and outs of the system
Thankfully with lower profile tyres i came in at 12.7mm different so squeezed it in by pure luck lol

Each and every police officer or Vicroads person I've ever spoken to/dealt with have a different answer on any given day. If there was one thing to be said, it is that anything changed from 'factory' is illegal.
It is really up to the individuals discretion if they want to be a pain in the butt. I have had lots of times where I have been pulled over and not being defected for things that I knew were illegal (my cars are normally pretty heavily modded). With something like 17x8 on a Polo, I HIGHLY doubt you will ever have any issues mate. Don't worry about it and enjoy your wheels!

I'm more worried about insurance and having a bingle! While not at fault and having a claim denied but they would have to prove that the wheels were the fault I guess lol I'm not so bothered anymore you guys are a great help (;
