Changing stock headunit for updated unit.

Hi, new guy here. I'll be lurking about, picking up things as I go, and asking annoying questions.
Just purchased a 2010 skoda octavia rs, will hopefully be picking it up mid this week, my annoying questions are, the stock head unit has the revering sensors (diagram of car) plus radio and cd stacker. I want to upgrade to a newer stock model. One with Bluetooth and gps. Which will fit (plug and play)? Is there any I should steer clear from? Or should I go aftermarket?

Sounds like you have an RCD510.
Clearest upgrade path for nav is RNS510 head unit.
For bluetooth you add a separate module called 9w7 which is compatible with either the RCD510 or RNS510.

I have an RNS510, I think version D, in my CC... it works OK. Obviously it integrates with MFD and MFSW and shows RVC, Climate control, etc... The unit is a bit slow and lags sometimes but I got used to it, the sound quality is OK.

I started with upgrading my speakers to Soumatrix Xtase, then I wanted to upgrade to a unit with DAB+. After doing an extensive research, these were my options: (all the below head units are a perfect fit, no need for faceplates)

RNS510 with SSD and DAB+: (costs $2000 from Australia) + 9w7 bluetooth module (Costs around $300). Of course if you don't need DAB+ it will be cheaper. You will need to get Colombus to match Skoda's green lights.

Blaupunkt Philadelphia 835: this unit comes in 2 versions, one that doesn't support DAB+ add-on (costs $820 on eBay) and one that does (costs around $1500). It comes with iGo Primo 9 Navigation and Built in Parrot Bluetooth. It also has CAN integration, so it will work with MFD (limited) and MFSW and will show parking sensor information and other stuff. From what I read, the sound quality is good. You can customise the light colour to match Skoda's Green.

Blaupunkt Wolfsburg: similar to the above unit, but it is very new and supports DAB+ add-on (Costs $1800 from Germany). This unit is offered by VW Europe as an upgrade. You can customise the light colour to match Skoda's Green.

Kenwood DNX525DAB: This unit is an official upgrade from VW UK, it has DAB+ built in, DSP, Garmin City Navigator, Parrot Bluetooth and CAN interface. (Costs $1300 from eBay). From what I read, the sounds quality is great. You can customise the light colour to match Skoda's Green.

There are other manufacturers that make units to replace RCD510 and RNS510:

Clarion RMT400N: Good unit, but no Australian maps.
Alpine X800d-u: Good unit, local support and warranty, but very expensive (Costs $2600)

I purchased the Kenwood DNX525DAB from Germany, I'm hoping to receive it before the weekend.

Please note, if you have a factory RVC, it won't work with any custom head unit. VAG RVC are RGB+ with a custom 26 pin connector, all the custom head unit has a CVBS connector. I bought a Navlinkz adapter that should take care of this problem.

There are many other Chinese units, some of them are alright, but I'd go with a reputable brand.

Fully agree with this based on actual experience
I bought a Chinese drop in unit for my wife's Mazda 3 - $300

The radio reception is very poor - fades in and out and crackles
The navigation crashes once a week
The navigation is clunky to use - way too many delays and buttons to start a navigation
While bluetooth works, the audio quality of the drivers voice is poor

I would not go down the cheap Chinese path again...

I will review the Kenwood DNX525DAB after installing it and using for a while.

It is usually the big price difference that steers buyers towards the Chinese RNS510 alternatives, although I have seen some of them selling for $1000!!!

Anyway, here is a pic of the Blaupunkt Philadelphia in green, showing parking sensors proximity in centimeters, I like that :)

hmmm for example, when I start the car, it takes a couple of minutes for navigation to be ready. Phone book entries take 5 minutes to show up as well.
If I start the car and put it in reverse, RVC take a bit of time before showing the live image. I'd be done with reversing before it shows up sometimes.
Loading music on SD card takes a bit of time... things like that.
The device is very stable though, I never had a single crash. Newer models with newer CPU's and SSD are probably faster.

how did you find the Blaupunkt Philli? There is a new model out now the 845.

I want to upgrade the standard 310, unsure of the carjoying, erisin brands.

Open to any advice
