2010 Golf wagon 103tdi using coolant

Hi All,

I've had a T4 transporter for a decade now, and its still going pretty well, I just bought a 2010 103tdi golf wagon, love the car and its fuel economy except it seems to be using coolant (currently refilling expansion bottle every few hundred km).

Have removed engine covers top and bottom, unable to see any leaks so far.

Coolant is clean, oil is clean, hoping this isn't a head gasket or cracked head ??

Are there any other ideas on coolant loss on 103tdi engines ?

My 1.6 tdi (Jetta) has developed a slow coolant leak in the last 15,000 ks- leaks down to the warning light alarm every 5,000 ks (?) approx.
On inspection at 180000 k service by VW workshop, a small leak was found where the waterpump is situated.
I'm carrying it till the next sevice when timing belt and waterpump will be changed, just watching and topping up when required.
Not a 103 tdi but a 77tdi. Don't5 know the differences . :)

Thanks for the reply Rory, was it possible to see coolant residue on the outside of your engine (where the leak was) ?

I looked on garage floor where I park and under the bonnet without undoing anything or removing covers
and I saw no signs of where it was going or coming from. ( Guess you might go to Cricks on Sugar Road as I do )
