VW/Tiguan newbie in Perth

I recently purchased a 2010 Tiguan which is my first VW.
I've already purchased a set of 18's, which I can't yet fit because they're directional rims and they've sent me 3 in one direction and 1 in the other and my OCD won't allow for that mess, thankfully they will be supplying me with the correct rim free of charge once they get the stock in which means full size spare
Short term future mods.
-BC coils
-New turbo dump pipe with high flow cat
-Performance air filter
-Iridium plugs
-Stage 2 tune (more than likely with snap crackle and pop)
-Upgrade the front to the face lift style

Me too! What spec and how many kms? If petrol maybe check your timing chain and tensioner condition. They probably should be changed.

I’d be too scared to boost power before spending a little of your mod budget on getting the 10 year old engine close to 100%. Nothing like a blown engine needing $10,000 repairs on a $8,000 car sitting with $6,000 of aftermarket mag wheels and performance mods.

It's a 147 tsi, manual, petrol and it just clicked over to 138k. So given the kilometres one would assume the timing chain has been maintained but something does occasionally rattle on start up so its worth a check up.

Actually, that’s the problem. It’s not supposed to need maintenance being a chain drive *but* early 09-13 models were built with two Achilles Heels.

1) a faulty chain tensioner that can fail and destroy the engine at any time. A new updated part exists.

2) the actual chain can stretch with age enough to jump teeth on the sprocket and totally destroy the engine.

Much online about these issues.

A poor service history of oil changes accelerates the problem. 10,000km not 20k intervals and correct high quality oil always.

So,unless you have actual documentation of these being replaced I’d get them professionally checked and consider the $1700 to replace with updated parts before you even think about adding any more horses under the bonnet.

A rattling sound is a huge huge warning of a loose chain.

A VW mechanic can check on the computer the level of chain stretch.

Its got 2 recall stickers inside the door is their a way to check what these relate to?
Its a sort of rattle sound, I don't quite know what it is, it almost sounds like a diesel on start up.

OMG be very very afraid and run don’t walk your car to a specialist VW expert shop immediately! They will plug it into a computer and read the amount of timing delay caused by chain stretch.

I recommend Euro Technic. Out of interest where has it been previously serviced?

Recalls are for other small items - you can check this yourself on the VW website using your VIN.

For the tensioner it was so massive a global problem VW gave owners extra warranty. The later DSG gearbox issue was another matter where they replaced gearboxes.

Oh joy I'll get onto that one then, the car unfortunately didn't come with its service history which does concern me slightly but the car does run really well and I consistently get 650ks out of a tank which gives me a bit of faith that everything is running sweet.

Considering I've spent the money on an extended warranty, do you think it would be an idea to get Euro Technic to do a comprehensive check on it and give me a report if anything needs to be fixed so I can push to get it fixed through one of the warranters "approved mechanics"

100% get it checked out ASAP.

Those aftermarket warranties often have limitations and if you kill the engine it won’t cover a whole lot. Typically they’re limited to $3,000 and a new engine fitted is going to be a lot more than that. You’ll be significantly out of pocket.

Absolutely! No service history is a definite concern as how do you apply a warranty if there is no history of the correct maintenance ever being done? The warranty would have a quick escape clause.

These are a complex and high performance engine that needs excellent care to last.

Don’t expect warranty to pay for this repair (now or later if the engine blows up) as it is standard maintenance. I would not want to depend on them also if the engine detonated as may take many months of battle with a dead car.

Eurotechnik also do the performance modification side so you have a perfect partner there to work with.
