I had a Passat CC (same running gear as R36) be very careful if it starts making chattering noises from the middle of the enginebay (Timing chanin is at back of engine where gearbox mates)) i pulled mine down to do a timeing chain replacement, Never again.... If paying for it, its expensive, if DIY, less so, but tedious and frustrating. The chattering chain was there on cold startup, but then the car developed issues, turned out the fuel pump drive gear got out of sync with the camshafts, and started running like a bag of doggy doo. Only had 140k klms on it. mine was a 2011 model.

i dont know of many R36 engines that dont end up needing the chain guides/chains replaced
