Cold engine

Hi guys,

I have just purchased my 04 Golf. The car is immaculate but i have noticed a bit of a noise.

When the engine is cold, first thing in the morning type cold, the engine makes this metallic/harsh sound when it turns over.

As this is my first VW and GOlf, im not sure how normal this is. Is this normal? Is there something I can do to prevent it?

Any advise/tips, would be much appreciated

If the noise goes away afte a couple of seconds, this is the hydraulic lifters making noise. They are often noisy until they are pressurised with oil and begin to work properly. This is normal.

At your next service, ask the mechanic to run a lower viscosity oil for the winter months. This will alleviate the problem - however there is no real problem anyway, like I said, its normal.

Another reason that the hydraulic lifters may be noisy at startup for a longer period of time is that the oil level is low or the car is way past its normal service interval. Check the oil level to be sure and I suggest an oil change sooner rather than later.
