I'd be very interested hear from people who HAVE NOT been caught up. I think I have worked out why we are getting such a high false positive (compared to what we used to get) but am still testing.

Well I have tweaked the system again *fingers crossed* it helps with the false positives.

Hotmail in and of itself should cause an issue and based on the number of requests for unlocking I'm getting we are getting better... although still not good enough so I'll keep working on it.

The flip side to the whole argument is that we get very little spam, which is a good thing if a little bit of a pain for new users.

The other alternative is to go back to the old method, all new users are locked down so they can ONLY post in the newbies section until they have made their first post.

The downside is that new members have to wait up to 15 minutes for the accounts to be unlocked so they can post in other places (this is a 100% automated task so will happen automatically at all times of day and night.

This also doesn't solve the spam problem but it does mean that it should all be caught in one place. The real downside is that we get literally hundreds of spammers register everyday. These accounts are banned then eventually deleted but if that had to be done manually it would cause significant extra work load on the mod team.

Ahhhh the joys of getting popular.
