    Unhappy Another tassie mk1

    Hi all, newbie needs help!
    Currently own a mk1 77 thanks to Luke how!

    has been happy sailing until a recent mishap where the bolt holding the left wishbone and sway bar decided to pop out (main st. Launceston at 5pm ) new bolt in, I make it around the first corner on my way to work and inner cv collapses, broke the bearing cage in half!

    oh well, on the phone to the mk1 King: Ed C and a new one's in the mail.

    After installing I realise the cv boots aren’t re-usable

    At this stage I was loosing confidence in the old beast, so took it down to pedders for a quick check, to make sure another wheel isn't going to fall off!

    Now here is where I need some advice:
    Shocks are buggered, that’s fine but what should I get? after something better than pedders!
    Rear right spring actually touches the tire sometimes, while the left has at least an inch gap? no idea?
    Steering rack has excess movement/wear, serviceable or replace and how hard?
    Disk break pads are actually rattling in there mounts? still got plenty of wear on them.
    finally, wheel bearings are loose - what else can I expect, or should I replace or upgrade while I'm at it?

    I realise I can only blame myself, it is obviously not set up for a daily and that's all I’ve used it for, so any help on getting it back to a daily would be awesome!

    I'm thinking its time to take it off the road and fix everything properly!

    Hey mate, welcome aboard. Sorry to hear about your unfortunate troubles, I can't be of much help other than to offer the advice of doing things yourself (if possible) to save some money

    Welcome to the forum mate. Sad to here of all the dramas with your Golf but I am sure your supplier will steer you in the right direction..

    Ya gotta look on the bright side

    People have been breaking down on Brisbane St for lotsa years, myself included - we used to drive round and round the block on Saturday mornings impressing the hell out of all the chicks Good to see nothing's changed much in Launceston

    It might be better to get one of these to fix your Mk1 problems

    Ah nice.
    It was an interesting break down, because of the wheel stuck under the arch we couldn’t push it. We were blocking kings way also
    spent 30mins with the car jacked up hammering the arm back in with cars going by our head Got more than enough attention that day, oh well at lest the golf is well known in launie now.


    new golf prielli looks good for a conversion into the mk1

    ahh buddy, someone was telling me that a MK1 broke down on brisbane street didnt know it was you

    like benny, buddy i know breaking down all too well.

    Dont have a nice new pic of her so this is luke at a hillclimb, car is same as, may explain why i need new shocks

    Funny thing that,take your car to a shop that sells shock absorbers for a check and guess what,you can guarrantee they will tell you that your shockies need replacing.
    Always get a second opinion and as that car has done very little mileage since it was totaly restored I doubt they need replacing.
    The art of owning older cars is learning up on them and doing as much maintenance as you can yourself.
    The good thing about a Golf 1 is that they are very simple and easy to work on.Good luck with it and at least you can ask Ed a million questions anytime.
