Tiggy's first service and a few issues

Purchased a 147 around 10 months ago (my11) so last week it went in for its first service at around 15500 km...when we purchased the vehicle we had the tow pack fitted which is all well and good but the thing that drives me nuts is reversing...obviously the parking sensors continuously beep so after 30 sec of reversing up the driveway my ears are ringing and I have to get out of the car - surely this is not normal, anyway I told the service department and they told me that there is nothing that can be done within the computer so they are ordering a wire that disables the sensors when the harness is connected so my question is why would this have been done when we purchased the vehicle as surely other people have this issue as well?

I also complained about a rattling sound around 1500-2000rpm and of course sitting in D7 at 80k's it reverberates through the car (great for around town) and as it turns out some clips have to be replaced on the wastegate - presume this is the norm?

Also, for some reason my boot light had never worked since new (err great pre-delivery) so I complained about this and it turns out that there was a wiring fault but I now have a boot light - probably the tech forgot to connect something after fitting the towbar

Question about the DSG - when the car is cold and you reverse out of the driveway you then select drive, it appears to be in angel gear for a few seconds then the gearbox grabs - is this normal? - I did ask the service adviser and he said this is normal but I get the impression that everything I asked his standard response was "that's normal" and all checked out ok. My concern is after the car runs out of warranty I will not be a happy person if the DSG expires as I can imagine it ain't going to be cheap fix. I must admit after driving the can for around 10 months I feel at times that the DSG has a mind of it's own especially if you need to accelerate quickly and whilst the car is very comfortable to drive I still prefer a manual as I have more control over it, I sometimes use sports mode but it's really clunky when stopping/starting so tend to leave it in drive mode - guess that's the way the gearbox is so not sure if I'd purchase another even though the other half likes it - down to a personal choice I guess.

My first service cost $370 which from what I can tell is just an oil and filter change, reset of the service indicator, a wash and a vacuum and out the door - good money for not much work

It seems clear to me that the reverse sensors were the accessory version, not the factory-fitted PDC. The PDC setup has provisions for when a trailer is connected. The accessory version does not. Sounds like a case of didn't ask, didn't get.

Yes, this is a documented repair. Although, most go un-repaired.

Most likely. That whole trim comes out to fit the towbar wiring and control module.

You can't rush the DSG, although they're a lot better than they used to be. Compare to a manually-shifting vehicle. Reverse out the driveway, then select 1st, and let the clutch out. Takes about the same time. They're both essentially manual transmissions, except one has a box of electrickery hanging off the the front of it changing gears for you.

Sounds bang-on to me. The oil's quite dear, plus it's a VW, so EuroTax applies. A 1.5hr service, at ~$120/hr, it's all there and accounted for.

The metallic rattling is apparently the wastegate but a lot of the Mk6 GTI guys have had it as well and they are saying it isn't the astegate as it's there after the fix.......

I paid $270 for my 1 year service at an independant that is covered by VW

Polos suffer from the same thing, with the wastegate chatter. There's revised Engine Control Module software for them, for finer wastegate control, that is supposed to fix them. Personally, I think it's a design flaw, that we'll all have to live with just like we do with all the other typical noises an engine makes.

Comparing an independant to a dealership is like apples to oranges. Factor in the sheer amount of equipment the dealer is required to lease/purchase from VW, plus all the other overheads.

I just put it down the the engine noises as you can barely hear it unles you are listening for it.
Best way to overcome this would be a new catback exhaust to drown it out

I understand there is massive costs involved to the dealership but in the end i still get the same amount of work done to the car but by a guy who needs to do the job well to keep his business afloat.

    Hi mate,
probably old news now, but I had the same problem with Dealer fitted (genuine) towbar pack - reverse beeper always going off when in reverse and trailer on. Turns out the didn't change a simple code in VAGCOM which tells trailer control module that trailer is wired for Australian market. Bingo - no more beeper and nice little piccie in display showing the trailer attached
The wastegate rattle is also a recognised thing for which there is a "TPI" warranty fix, but will mean two trips - one for them to confirm it's there, and another when the get approval from VWA and get the clip to rectify it. I pretty much had to tell them about it though. Even got the spare parts girl to pre-order it so they had it in stock, but after driving 700km to get it to them they didn't do it (forgot to do first service in fact - idiots)
As many have already said - great product let down by shoddy Dealers!
