I recently purchased a used 2013 Tiguan 118TSI 1.4L CTHD. Bad idea... Piston failure... I wish I had noticed when I first inspected the vehicle.

I was recommended a wrecker by my mechanic - he sold me a replacement engine (supposedly a 2016 CTHD engine with 42k on the clock)... He recommended another mechanic to do the job who specialises in engine replacements on Euro cars. During the engine replacement mechanic told me the Flywheel and Clutch needed doing...

So lots of $$ later....

I collected the car and it drives well now. I opened the engine bay and noticed the engine looked fairly grubby with some signs of age. Possibly not stored well I thought. I noticed a ticking sound... The dreaded ticking sound. Not very prominent, but it's there for sure.

I checked the sticker on the side of the engine (the timing cover I believe). It says....

CAV 076 460 - 13-03-09

To me that says it's a 2009 CAV model!!!!! The dreaded doomed CAV model.... Oh no....

Is there another way to confirm the engine model and manufacture date before I go through the hell of fighting the mechanic or wrecker? I need to get my facts straight first.

This has been a horrible experience. I feel pretty deflated at this point.
