After market Wheels

Has anyone fitted after market wheels on their Tiguan?

I know that the Tiguan brochure says that 19" wheels fitted from factory require a "flared wheel arch package" or something along those lines.

Has anyone opted for wheels bigger than 19"? being a 4x4 im sure it should be able to fit on 20-22" rims.

The flared arches are to make sure the 9.5" wide wheel will fit and have no problems at all.
You probably don't need to worry about it, it could just be anther marketing ploy like the paint protection etc.

The main problem is going to be the cost of tyres and the availability of legal tyres if you go anything over 19" wheels.

What do you mean by legal rubber?

If you were to goto a place like Tempe Tyres and buy a set of wheels/ rubber for 22" rims is there a legal issue with the rubber?

Well the rolling diameter cannot increase by any more than 15mm to remain legal in Queensland and NSW

Since the tyres for the 19" wheels are pretty damn thin, i don't even know if you would be able to fit 20"+ wheels with tyres that remain inside the legal 15mm+ limit.

I believe the sidewall would be so shallow, it would be like putting rubber bands on your wheels.

Thanks for the link.. i guess that clears up the legalities in regards to wheels.

I'm sure an extra inch here and there will go unnoticed being a family car, and not a hotted up SSS Pulsar with P plates.

You would be surprised actually.

Every couple of months up here in QLd they do a blitz on any aftermarket/large/flashy wheel'd car and they get tonnes of people.

To be honest, i don't see the point in going anything over 19" anyway since they are mostly all chrome and look like *****, plus the functionality of the car is reduced and tyres would cost a bucket load but that's just my opinion.

You need to keep an eye on the 'load rating' of the new tyres too. If you have an accident and they find tyres fitted that are under the factory load rate level, you could be in poo poo.

Why would you want to reduce your car's handling, braking performance, cornering ability and ride quality?

As for buying wheels and tyres from Tempe Tyres

Good luck with the poor quality rims that are often drilled to fit and with poor quality rubber and don't be surprised if the rim ends up breaking first time you fit a pothole.
