    RNS510 - Low GPS Signal - Need help!!

    Hello all

    Iv searched around for this issue and wasn't able to find an answer. Looks like im not the only one though..

    A few days ago, VW Bayside installed an RNS510 I bought of eBay (they charged $288 inc GST for installation, coding and testing).

    Unfortunately, after it was finished they told me the unit is not getting GPS signal and therefore maps are not activating.. They think it might the the GPS Antenna.

    On the way home, after 10-15min of driving the SAT NAV started working.. I was wrapped!!

    Although, after a while I realized.. Occasionally, the unit looses GPS signal and shows a wrong location. It still moves as I drive though.

    Tested it yesterday, driving from Melbourne CBD to South Eastern suburbs. No signal driving from the city, and picked up once I got to Springvale Road.

    Signal works great in Dandenong area.

    From what i have found, it could be one of the following;

    1. Faulty GPS Antenna
    2. Incorrect location of GPS Antenna
    3. Faulty RNS510 Unit
    Im hoping its either 1 or 2. Any one had the same issue?

    Here are some photos of yesterdays tests;

    Thanks in advance!!

    Do you know where they located the GPS antenna?

    Mine is sitting on top of the system but i had heard that the golf ones require it to be stuck onto the inner upper surface of the stereo surrounds to get a better signal.

    At best it should of taken 1hr to install a RNS510 into a Mark6, A mark 5 is twice as much work to install and ive had mine in and out in about 30 minutes.

    My Antenna sits on the metal bar which runs across above the unit and picks up every thing .

    Ok so Iv spoken to VW and they said;

    "the GPS antenna is installed to the left of the unit above the glove box"

    Im not sure if this is right? The most satellites I pick up up is 5-6 out of 10/11 as per the photos above.

    Mine sits above the actual unit which places it dead in the centre of the windscreen.

    Ian's would be in this location as well from memory.

    What hardware revision is the RNS 510 and what software is it running.

    Sounds like you have Regensburg syndrome.
