Yes you can mate, I've updated my own 187B to AA with just firmware via USB. Others have tried it with success too. Anyone wanting to try just give me a shout via pm.

Yep!! That's exactly why I havent tried to upgrade my RNS510. Car Play and Android Auto are crippled with very few applications supported.
I've spent time getting an Android Auto equivalent going on a tablet and I'm very happy with the outcome. It's not as integrated as a replacement headunit, but gee it is way more functional, easier to reach and operate, and I havent sacrificed anything on the existing RNS510 to do it.
Im actually going to give one of the Android RNS510's a go and configure it with the same launcher Im using on the tablet. If it doesnt live up to my expectations I'll just get rid of the android unit and put the RNS510 back in and keep the tablet setup.
I really cant see the great interest in native android auto and car play, they are so dumbed down with limited application support, it's almost not worth the effort.
More here if you want to look at how I've approached it. It wont suite everyone but I love it. Custom Android Tablet integration w/ RNS510 Way better than Android Auto or Car Play!
Discover Media mirrorlink works well for what it's worth...
Yes but doesnt it only have limited application support unless you have a particular phone model that's rooted and with a modified rom in the headunit to give you full access to all apps in mirrorlink?
Actually, you can (I did it).
