Installation of a Mk7 Multi-Function steering wheel + paddles into a Mk6

have you had any luck getting any pin out information for 5 pin connector in the actual steering wheel button cluster? im doing something similar to everyone here, but not as hard.

im trying to use a JoyCon EXC to conver the LIN bus data to USB into my carPC. if this module can interpret any LIN bus signal, then i should be able to sniff the data from the steering wheel control cluster, but i can not perform this if the button module isnt 'on'. ive tried pin 1 as ground, pin 2 as +12v, and pin 3 as LIN data - but i have not had any luck. i can not confirm that the button clusters are even transmitting data after trying several combinations.

any suggestions would be fantastic.

Nah mate. Next time I'm in Canberra James has offered to get a sniffer onto both wheels to get a better idea of what needs to happen. I might be in Canberra in June

The solution as far as I'm aware is to buy a steering wheel for a Jetta or possibly current model Polo GTI that "looks" like a MQB platform wheel but is actually compatible with the "old" electronics. Don't buy a wheel out of a Mk7 Golf and try and install it into a Mk6. It wont work without sticking in some sort of conversion box to change/convert the LIN messages for each button press.

There were a few sellers on ebay selling these Mk7 "look" steering wheels. Otherwise if you install a proper Mk7 wheel you have to be prepared to lose some functionality from the steering wheel controls.

Just to add to tigger73's sage advice (and without wishing to steal his/her? thunder), here's a diagrammatic view of the reason why the mk7 steering wheel is fundamentally incompatible when retro-fitted to a mk6

According to VW's material and as can be seen, in the mk7, the multifunction steering wheel is included in the car's network, whereas the unit in the mk6 is simply directly connected to the steering wheel assembly.

So, while the multifunction steering wheel control unit J453 on the mk7 was previously a LIN slave to the steering column electronics control unit J527 (see E221 LIN wire), it is now connected directly to the diagnostic interface for data bus J533 as a LIN slave. As is shown in the picture above, the signals from the multifunction steering wheel are, as previously the case, transmitted via the coil connectors and the steering column electronics control unit, but for wiring reasons only. They do not have any effect on functions there (whereas they are part of the J527 functions on the mk6)

The OEM plus tuning loom gets everything working bar DSG and vagnostics in the U.K. have everything working except cruise control. So I remain hopeful that someone will crack it shortly.

I'll be starting a lin-lin converter project. So anyone with a lin sniffer are more than welcome to help! This is the only way to get it working and even the scirocco mfsw doesn't light up without this lin-lin translator so apparently a lot of people must be missing it?!

I have spoken to a couple of the guys in the UK that have Mk7 steering wheels working in a Mk6 and they are "plug and play". I am almost certain they are using the Polo or Jetta wheel that is based on the Mk6 platform. I have tried a genuine Mk7 wheel in my wifes Tiguan and it does not work. I've also compared the part#'s for steering wheels and the steering wheels that others are claiming work in Mk6 have different part#'s to Genuine Mk7 wheels.

Call me crazy- but i think the steering wheel used in the Mk6 GTI and R is one of the best looking and feeling steering wheels out there. The Mk7 wheel looks "thinner" and looks less chunky - im not a fan.
