It has nothing to do with the cable. The LIN Identifiers on the Databus are all different between PQ and MQB and no wire in this universe can change that. The 100% solution would be a lin to lin converter. But my module was lin to can and the lin/lin would be a complete new development. Possible yes. But not existing atm. It would take several months to develop.

That confirms my suspicions. But then I'm confused as to how others with supposedly Mk7 wheels with the cruise on the wheel have got theirs to work. I'm guessing there must be some versions of the Mk7 style wheel that are PQ and others that are MQB even though they may look identical.Quote:

Well perhaps these guys are getting the steering wheel from the latest Polo GTI. This is a PQ25 based car and not MQB, though they do look identical from the outside:

Although it looks the same I now believe this is the steering wheel that the guys in the UK will be using. It makes sense that everything but the cruise control works as likely the SWCM doesn't understand the LIN signals for the cruise control buttons so just ignores them.
So in summary a steering wheel out of an MQB car will not work in a PQ platform vehicle (and vice versa). There are a number of Mk7 "look-a-like" wheels out there (Scirocco/Polo) and you'll need to get one of these if you want to retro-fit into a Mk6.
I'm going to reconsider my options now. As I see it I can either sell the wheel I've got and start again, look to get some buttons to retrofit into my current wheel or develop a LIN-LIN converter to change the signals from MQB to PQ platform.
Though I think I might just put the old steering wheel back on for now while I consider my options.
Could be the case, although I'm sure some of the guys referenced Golf R.
@james - making a Lin / Lin converter. Is that something you do or would be interested in doing? Would you agree that this is the only way forward when trying to put the MQB based wheel into PQ / BCM ?
I would first check the steering wheel that you have is not for a Polo GTI or Scirocco. Unless you definitely know that it has come out of a Mk7 Golf R. I have learnt not to take sellers claims as true. It may look the same but underneath it will work completely differently.
The other thing that you could do is find some buttons from a Scirocco or Polo wheel and fit them to your steering wheel. This is probably easier than making a lin-lin converter as the other thing once you've made the little gadget you then have to put it somewhere. There's seriously not a lot of real estate under the new steering wheel to fit something like this.
Anyway I'm likely going to put my steering wheel up for sale as I'm not really prepared to sink extra $ into it with no guarantees that it's going to work - much better to put those $ towards a wheel that is guaranteed to work with my car.
A lin-lin converter would be a useful gadget if you had one as it would allow the Mk7 guys to retrofit a Mk6 wheel (but then they'd lose cruise control capability).
Tiger73: hi. Just started reading your thread - very courageous project indeed! Sounds like you have come full circle, but just for reference here is the wiring diagram for how the horn-plate and the MFSW control module is connected on a mk7

That confirms that mk7 and mk6 wiring are very similar except for how the horn is wired. The Mk6 routes the horn via the black connector so you get the message on LIN whereas the Mk7 just runs the horn direct.
Both mk6 & 7 run 12V, 0V and LIN on the same wires which is why it kind of works. However the commands for most of the buttons are different as the guys from Germany have confirmed which is why some buttons work, some do the wrong function and others don't work at all.
The only thing that is still a little mystery is the operation of black pin5 to Yellow 11 on the Mk7 which is marked as green on your wiring diagram (my harness had a grey wire). It could be for button illumination perhaps but I'm not 100% sure.
Don do you have DSG paddles in your car? I know of a wheel that could be going cheap if you're up for it!!!! ;)
Stay strong for another week tigger. We might yet find a solution. Lots of irons in the fire.
Hahaha. I don't see any way out of it other than dropping another $100-200 on a new set of buttons which may or may not fit/work.

Except these ones are for a Mk7 Golf so are identical to what I currently have. You'd need the Polo or Scirocco equivalent plus you'd need to hope they fit :)
