B5 passat, Gamma Audi system & Ipod/iphone

Hi Guys

about to buy a passat with the gamma audio system

in regards to ipod intergration, whats the best method that works and is reliable

i hear mixed results and also read that aftermarket headunit is a option, however the loss of steering wheel controls & display on the dash of whats on is lost

can somebody please school me on this please - i am a novice when it come to car audio

if i go aftermarket, will prob go Alpine
