Data Loggers/Lap Timers

Peter Jones has a VERY impressive setup with his Race-Technology DL1 + Dash 2 setup but it's overkill for someone like me who won't be racing in any forseeable future.

So a few options were presented in this thread but I was wondering what people are using?

I've leaning towards Harry's Lap Timer (not sure about Standard or Pro version) with my iPod Touch and a TomTom GPS cradle as an intro device.

We have been using the Racelogic Performance box for years but this thing is so user friendly

My AIM laptimer recently died and I want to add a couple of extra instruments so I'm about to buy and fit a Haltech/Racepak IQ3 Logging Dash. It is plug and play with my CAN-based ECU. Not cheap but when I add up the cost of a new timer and decent supplementary instruments it isn't quite so bad.

Just got Harry's Lap Timer Pro App for my iPone. It is brilliant and quite accurate. It has many useful features and allows me to video laps, export data to my home PC and for $19.99 you can't really go past it unless you want to spend $400 or so on a professional setup.

I should have updated that I have found this to be pretty good during my last 2 track days. This display that shows how your previous lap compared to your best is quite handy - accuracy with the 1Hz GPS update is not perfect but good enough for playing about.

I have the Qstars 10hz GPS logger (818XT) paired with RaceChrono running on an android mobile phone. This allows for the most accurate, speed and split time information.

GPS ones are great and user friendly and these days are the best options. being a bit old fashioned though I do like the reliability of the infrafred beacon type timers and for just straight timing and accuracy the aim sports ones can't be beat. I've been using a aim sports mychron for probably 8 years in various cars and it's always been good.

but racechrono is good too as long as you have a GPS unit with a high enough sample rate. 10hz is very good/fast.

but yeah if you just want basic timing an old style infrared beacon system is still very good. this is the one I used. mychron light TG (the backlit one with blue display which is super easy to read) AiM Sports - The World Leader in Data Acquisition

aimsports do have a GPS one now too for about $400 which makes it a bit pricey for what it is. I think the mychron light these days is only $250 or so and extra beacons (to do split times etc) are about $50. the great thing is they are still very popular in track cars/race cars so there is always at least one beacon on the pit wall if you don't want to put your own up you just 'acquire' and use someone elses (unless they take it home early!).
