Finally found the time this week to rip out the 02A gearbox, Huuuuge Flywheel and clutch and vague feeling cableshift mechanism and massively long clutch cable out of our 16v Toledo this week.
In its place I put an 8v 020 Gearbox, with the rodshift and a new clutch cable.
I fiugured the more powerful engine pushing a lighter gearbox with better ratios should improve acelleration somewhat. I think VW erred on the side of caution putting cable shift boxes in the ABF cars, the KR 16v Golfs never had it and were better for it. IMO.
I had a couple of clutches I could have used, but the lightened Mk2 GTI Flywheel and new clutch won the day.
New CVs and Engine Mounts seemed like a good idea too.
Just got it all bolted back together today and WOW
The car acellerates soooooo much quicker, you can chirp the tyres in second and third, and it actually gives people a run at the lights instead of having no power below 3000rpm.
Speedo cable has detached somewhere, so no figures yet, but everyone else was going very slowly on their way home![]()
