I have used mine on several VR6s in melbourne and never had a problem. I got the can-bus compatible one as well though cos I always figured id end up getting a mk5.
Hi all
I'm considering buying a VAG-COM from Ross Tech and was wondering if anybody here has used it on earlier cars like mine. Any info would be helpful...

I want to confirm that it will actually work on my car before ordering one.
1994 VR6 Golf
Build date: March 1994
ECU number: 021 906 258 BK
There was someone here advertising that they had one in their sig.
I remember he was from Adelaide. Anybody know his screen name?
Thanks in advance.

I have it and live in Adelaide. Should work fine on a VR6. I can use it on my 'old' Ibiza and I had a 1994 16V mk3 Golf in the UK.
If you have an ODB socket then it'll pull info out of it. Engine ECU and ABS, don't be surprised if it doesn't find much else to talk to, cars of that era are thin on the electronics.

Thanks Gavin and Tim
Can you please confirm that you've scanned a 1994 VR6.![]()
yeah ive scanned 2 94s. Cant remember what ECUs they were running though
Mine is a 95 with a CH ECU.
As gavin says. So long as you have the Diagnostics port near your ashtray then you should be fine.
If you are really concerned. Find someone local to scan your car as a test
Thanks Tim.
I was just concerned about spending nearly $300 on the thing and it not working on my car. But I do have an OBD style port next to my ash tray so it should be OK.
I did try and pull codes off it using the blink method but this didn't work.
So then pulled the dash apart and checked the "MIL" (check engine light) in the dash. I check the bulb and it worked fine on 12volts.
I then checked the plug that goes into the instrument cluster and at pin 20 there's nothing at all. No plug or wire. According to my Bentley there should be a wire there for the "check engine" light.
Maybe our cars don't have this function.
Anybody know for sure?![]()

110% works on your car mate, even works on old Audi 80 with the black and white plugs no worries. Mate if you are looking at OBD2 compliant vehicles like Porsche and the likes you can scan them too but only engine of course. Worked on a Saab 95 Aero for me too but again only engine.
Great program mate, you wont regret it
Cheers
