whats the legality of doing this in oz? engineers certificate required? spose if it is OEM 'looking' then it would pass rego without too much hassle...

Don't know about oz mate I'm on the other side of the ditch... K one W one!!
I think it has to be certed here too, like you say if it looks OEM and your welds are tidy.... Whos to know. Just do it. Go to a wreckers or if you know someone whos breaking a Mk4 grab the rails and weld em in. My brother is doing a Mk 2 build that has a 1,8t and the Mk4 Recaro interior. Hes welded the whole Mk 4 tunnel in and has fitted the Mk 4 seat rails in there too.
Heres some shots of my seats from a US imported Mk4 Jetta

Scroll down a little.
Gti-VR6 your car looks tops man, I rate it:)
I've always thought about doing a mk4 seat conversion in mine...just that little touch of new to bring it right up to scratch...Although, I'd have to get something comfier than the VR seats which may be hard ;)
Cheers mate, its a worthwhile mod. You just need to look around for some seats or wait till some come up. The trick is getting them for the right price. Some wreckers want the earth for seats. Even the cloth mk 4 Recaros are really nice and snug. The new beatles have cool seats in them too. Although the bolsters are not quite as high as GTi seats. They have the height adjustment on the side. I'm in love with my seats especially now its winter,
I have hooked up the wiring to the heated elements. Toasty!
