Congrats on the purchase. The Haynes manual reads 15W40, 15W50 or 20W50, to API SG/CD or VW spec 500 00. I just go for the sub-$30 Castrol oils, like the GTX3 15W40. Runs beautifully.
Just bought a 1997 Mk3 Golf Cabriolet for my daughter. It's her first car and she loves it. I haven't got a manual yet so I hope you can help with the specs of oils the car needs. Please use 10w/40 etc as I don't understand the VW specs.
eg. engine, auto, final drive etc.
It has service books and has only 138000 km on the clock. Is there anything I should look out for. My car is a 2001 Bora and I'm used to that.
thanks

Thanks for the reply. I've got a manual on order but I always change fluids when I get a car.
I use Castrol Edge 5w/30 in the bora.
Any idea if the transmission is synthetic like Max Z? It looked like Dextron when I pulled the plug to check the colour today.
If an auto box, yes it uses Dexron - I don't know much about auto gearboxes but the Haynes manual reads Dexron II.
As for other fluid, the brakes uses DOT4 and power steering fluid is listed as VW hydraulic oil G 002 000.
Thanks for the info.
At least I know I wasn't seeing things with red trans fluid.
