But since Golf GLs are still a bit out of my budget.. would I be better off with a mK2 Gti? Ive seen a few on the for sale forums here for around 3-4k?

I don't own one, but from what I hear they're a great fun little car to have. If you can find one without any problems that are gonna cost you, then I'd say it would be a good idea. Maintenance advice would best be sought from the mk2 section of this form ;)
