Yes we have Bunnings. Tried them first. Nothing bigger then 10mm. The sales guy was all "wtf you need SEVENTEEN mm for?!".
We have a ton of hardware stores over here, I wasnt having a good day so gave up after two. I'm going to ring a few places tomorrow and see if I strike it lucky.
Ps. the Motul oil smells like hell :X
Well, after kind of forgetting about the whole thing for a while, I stumbled on a trade orientated tool shop whilst out shopping for new beds today. +1 to 17mm hex socket!
It's a very hefty peice of kit. Wasn't cheap either, $13!
May have a crack at doing the change on thursday or on the weekend :)
I may have to tag along to watch this, firstly for lolz, secondly to see how it's done.

So now that I figured out how to jack my car up properly (much thanks to runamuk!), i had a crack at doing the oil... and ran face first into a seized fill socket :duh:
No amount of effort got it loose. Not even warming up the car and pushing so hard the engine began to pivot on its mounts. Finally when the socket began to deform I gave up.
Didnt even try the drain hole, coz I'd like to drive the car this week, heh.
My dub is due for service soon, so I will let joe @ golfwagen loose on it - good luck to him!!
Also as an aside, the motul gear oil I was doing to use is GREEN! Aheeeeeeeeeee :D:D
I'm gonna revive this thread as i'd like to change my gearbox oil too. I have a 2.0 GL '96 Golf MK3 so what's the best oil for my gearbox?
And did you get your mechanic to help with the stuck bolt?

Can i put my 2c worth in with an awesome fix for seized bolts and the likes.
I used this method in the UK many times as we had everything seized with the salty roads and moisture. Brake fluid is the BEST for seized bolts. I took this fix to Porsche and they use it mate still to this day. I used first on Passat track rods. Now pour or syringe brake fluid onto the offending threads and man ive seen the threads smoke!!! as thre corrosion gets eaten away. Ive had stuck O2 sensors in 911s and soaked them in brake fluid, went to smoko and when we came back no worries mate.

U can always fill by the speedo hole as long as u know how much oil to put in. I know for 020 its 2L if memory serves correct (or was it 2 quarts?).
