Always go by the date stamped on the plate in the engine bay, should be a small aluminium rectangular plate.
My car VIN registers with the authorities as '96 but it's stamped as mid '95, I guess they just rounded the date up.

Hm, so if it says 91>95 and then 95>98 which one should i be picking? Or will either work?

I think your the first P plater to ever worry about what's illegal on a car!!! Dannngggggggggg!
Just buy the dam coilovers, cops don't worry about us, as they target mainly jap, commo, falco drivers. (Yes I've heard about the bastard mountain goat coppers)
Just don't make it low, think of a sensible height and you'll have nothing to worry about.
Your exhaust on the other hand ...
Put the resonator back in, it'll help.
And u can't run wide wheels with springs, u need coilovers !

Yeah go with coilovers man, you shouldn't have any problems at all with rego with coilovers unless you are an inch off the ground.
I got rego'd with the VR 40mm from the floor... honestly, I'm surprised I never got done for anything with that car; you'll be fine.

If you need a blue slip(unregistered vehicles) coilovers are a no go, but for a pink slip they are fine. Find a qdifferent mechanic if he's being a hard arse. If you just want modest drop run coilovers and keep every part of the car above 100mm, cops won't care if you above legal height and its near impossible to see the struts without lifting the car up anyway.
Thats true - but being on a low budget i would only be able to afford something under 500$. Ive been tempted to get JOMs as ive heard theyre actually some of the best low budget ones, but i cant find myself to sacrifice how comfy it is now and regret getting them.
