    Mk3 Golf Clutch/Gearbox Help?

Hey every1, i recently bought a 97 golf mk3 cl from a workmate. from what i can establish its a single point injected 1.8 litre.

    i had to get it towed to mine as the clutch isnt working, i've searched around the forums and the net, cant really find anyone talking about this situation, basically the clutch pedal had no recoil once you pushed it in, through the process of elimination;

i've checked and the clutch cable is working fine.

The clutch appears to be mechanical rather than hydraulic?,

There was no spring back from the lever when you pushed it down.

so yesterday me and my mechanic buddy pulled off the gearbox.
the lever and spring setup seems to be in tact and working fine, this lever seems to push a long pin down to the pressure plate etc.

the setup of the vw gearbox is quite strange and foreign to us, everything kind of in reverse, this is where we get confused..

does anyone have a diagram we can look at?

there was a fair bit of clutch dust and grease around the casing. all the plates look they've been pretty hot.

so we'll prob look at buying a clutch kit and putting that in.

Does anyone have any ideas or input?

    many thanks in advance, krishna

    Colud be a few things.

The throw out lever (part 12) is a common fault.

I have seen 2 of those levers busted in my time. One on my MK2 GTI years ago and one on evorobin's 16V, maybe 2 years ago.

well looks like the throw out lever has a cracked, the gold watch goes to peter and h100vw.

i might replace both how much do you want for part 10 karmen?

i might do the clutch while i have it open what do you guys think? i've been quoted anywhere from 300 - 600 for clutch kits kinda pricey.
had any experience with aftermarket vs Vw clutches?

    Cheers

You might want to check out importing the bits from the US.

    For example , here's the lever you're after. US$21.95

    http://www.germanautoparts.com/Volks...smission/129/2

Might get a bit pricey to fly in a pressure plate though.

Local VW parts places like VolksBaru in Noble Park or an of the VW servicer shops should be able to get you the bits through HSY too. HSY parts will be cheaper than VW dealers.

There's a couple of VW garages that frequent these forums who would happily post you the parts if you ask them nicely.

I have broken that part too. My replacement part was $12 from a melbourne supplier but that was in a 2.0 gl dunno if that makes any difference. I can't remember which supplier or find the receipt.

After market clutches suck. I have had heavy duty cbr and sachs clutches and they both wore out very fast and didn't end up being as heavy duty as the genuine vw part. I think there are graded levels of genuine vw clutches and the heaviest is the best. The one in my car at the moment is twin plate and heavier than the original clutch I took out.

Revving to 5000 in first then changing with a dump without letting off the accellerator feels like getting slapped in the back.

If you ring HSY, sound like a mechanic and give them a credit card number over the phone they will sell you anything - and deliver!

I spoke with hsy the were totally unfriendly and dont like making money!

German auto parts on the other hand more friendly and keen for the business.
    So manny good parts too.
    Thanks Peter.

I'll buy from germansutoparts one last question they dont have a listing for my 1.8L 8v mk3 but i'm pressuming based on images that the american listing Golf 3 2.0L 8V 93-99 gearbox parts should fit my gearbox?

    Cheers
