mk2 Brake Upgrade

Looks very nice, except I would not like to put it in the post
They might do a deal without the rotors & you can pic them up over here

There is a place in Canada called momentum motor parts or something very similar, who do well priced willwood brake kits for dubs & will send without the discs

the power seller on ebay motots yhat I got my girling 60s is called euro rescue & they tubo list every fortnight
altogether I landed the girling 60 calipers & carries for about $260 au & all of the othe parts are available in oz

OUt of interest I rang audi in Brisbane to get a price for new calipers & carriers & got quote more than 4k

Yep thats the place I mean, they make some very high quality gear

I haven't got any of their stuff
I nearly brought a set of the adaptors for my mk2 instead of doing the mk3 hub conversion
The only reason that I did not was because they are illegal here
it all looks like the type of thing I would like to put on my car

The way to go IMO is like Robins set up. 256mm hubs and calipers with 280 discs and carriers.

A Passat or Mk3 Golf would be the cheapest source, you need to have the ball joints too if starting with early 239s.

Robin's brakes are tremendous, even without the bigger master cylinder.

So I havent upgraded the brakes yet. Its next on the list hence the information needed flowing in this thread.

I'm liking the Wilwood's in the link above but not sure if its just a bolt on.

What is the effect of a 22mm master cyl ?

do Robins g60 brakes have 1 or 2 pistons & do you mean the standard 20mm MC ???
I have heard that the twin pistons need at least 22mm or even better a 25mm MC to cope with the extra cylinder

to answer assieG60 Q. about the willwoods (metal porn), I think that they come with the adaptor plate to suit either a mk1 or a mk2

The Wilwoods are a 4 piston caliper, so definately a 22mm MC + ?

The perfomance-cafe 280x22 looks like a good kit with everything included for the upgrade.

What would you gain from the Wilwoods ? (metal porn for your eyes ;)) or much improved braking than the performance-cafe kit ? :confused:

Fellas, I reckon the Wilwoods would go ok on MK1 or 256mm MK2 hubs but not the std MK2 239s.

None of the std fit brakes have 2 piston calipers.

Providing the pistons are the right correct diameters in twin piston caliper there is no reason that a larger master cylinder should be required.

A bigger MC would increase pressure in the system and reduce pedal travel but not improve feel as the brakes would be dead sharp and harder to modulate.

Robin's pedal feels just right and doesn't feel soggy in operation.


<Dad mode on> buying wilwoods for anything other than cosmetic reasons would be a waste on most road VWs. I had a close to 200hp G60 and ran std 280s with good pads. Exactly the same setup would haul down the substantial weight of my Passat syncro without any fade. <Dad mode off>
