How do you know it's the problem?

I'd be testing it before you replace it. Off the top of my head, there'll be a couple of contacts that are for inlet air temp and another pair that relate to the position of the flap.

Once you have worked out which, you can test it with a DVM on resistance. The resistance will change with the position of the flap, as you move from fully closed to fully open the resistance should change smoothly.

If the readings jump about or go to infinity, then that would indicate a problem.

You might find out from the wiring diagrams in the Haynes manual which does what.

What your symtoms mate , whats steering you to the airflow meter???? Some one has probably been messing around with the sweep arm which is very common on them - tell tale silicone around the lid of it mate.

Sounds like some has been fiddling with it.

See if there are any notches they may have marked on it.

Has the rest of the air box been modified at all?

I know that you can put in a Bosch air flow meter from a BMW 5 series 85-86?
    (dont quote me).
and improve your power slightly, but you may need a different filter set up.

Other wise you can source a OEM one through your local Euro parts supplier.

Should not be too hard to replace.
