If you're registered with VW as the owner then you'll likely get a letter (i.e. for remainder of new car warranty).

Once they find out it's been tuned though all bets are off. If you want to take it in as part of the recall I'd get it everything flashed back to stock before taking it back to the dealer.

Then again they'll probably only be replacing units that are deemed to be running outside specification so depends whether you want to go through the hassle of having everything unflashed and then reflashed.

If they are going to take it apart to inspect it, then they would be foolish not to replace it. The thing is that they have set dates where there is the potential for a problem. This means that if the problem shows up shortly after they have given it the all clear, they could still be liable. In fact this talk of a class action would make much more sense if it occurred after the recall has happened and VW cut corners in the recall.

Inspecting things can introduce issues that were never there in the first place. I get involved with process plant where pressure relief valves have to be inspected and tested periodically. To do this, the relief valve has to be removed and tested on a test bench. There are numerous instances where a relief valve passes and is re-certified, only when reinstalling it something does not go quite right, or a minute bit of dirt or cleaning cloth ends up in the valve and then it leaks or jambs and fails to operate when needed. I know one client who simply replaces the relief valve as it has caused them fewer problems than removing, testing, re-certifying.

It will be interesting to see what VW do. The labour is the major component, and it would be a much worse PR issue to either not replace things or actually leave the owner worse off because what they have replaced is no better than what was supposed to have the problem.

I'm just hoping that they don't spring the "standard for this type of vehicle" line. I think that that has worn out its welcome.

Not necessarily. Will have to wait and see what transpires.
Could they not simply inspect the DSG for mechatronic software revision and if not already routinely updated, repair by updating the software from "0AM 300 046 C" to "0AM 300 048 N" or whatever the latest is?
Would prefer to get a new mechtronics unit with the good oil in it though.

The recall would most likely follow those in Singapore, Japan,, China where batches of mechatronics are replaced no questions asked.
