    minimum tyre clearance to strut

I've just been doing a bit of a test fit with my track rims now that I'm going to run 215's up front on my 9N3 Polo gti. If I run my 15mm spacers that I was using with my 205's, I end up with a 12.5mm drill bits clearance between the tyre sidewall and the coil over body. I do need to move the rim inboard as the tyres are sitting wide of the fender so I need to do something. I've calculated that if I go to say an 8mm spacer I should have about 5mm clearance against the strut. Is that too close? I think with low profile tyres I'd be ok but I'm on 215/50/15 on the track that will have a bit of sidewall deflection. safe?

    Should be fine.
Be lucky to have 2mm clearance on some of my previous setups.
Tyre shouldn't be deflecting at the top

yeah you're right. They should maintain that 5mm gap no matter what the contact patch is doing. Just looks a bit tight. Cool thanks I'll get to turning down my spacers then. thx

    Yeah 5mm should be fine.
Don't think I have any 8s to offer as a test fit unfortunately

no that's cool. I'll chuck them on the lathe tomorrow. I have a pair of 13mm and a pair of 12's so can afford to sacrifice two for the cause.

Tracked like this, only rubbed the small ‘specification’ lettering off the tyre.

Machine them to 7.5mm which was bang on. I cant go less as the tyre gets too close to the strut and cant really come out further or the spacer will occupy too much of the hub spigot meaning that the rim isn't hub centric anymore and forcing me to jump right up to 12-15mm spacers with the hub centric spigot on them. I've been forced to loose about 10mm of front track the way it is now but will be getting a fair bit more tyre on the road. Scrub radius will move a bit in the negative direction too so we'll see how it goes. thanks for the help peoples
