Gear selector is fine, just the little strip of leather on top is showing some wear. Will replace this sometime soon as i have been looking at options.

Shifter surround has started to peel. Also looking for replacement options but they all seem to be for LHD models.

Can confirm my waterpump (which i believe is original) has started to leak. Keeping an eye on it but its very minor at the moment.

Just fitted a brand new start/stop button last night as the original one was starting to play up meaning you would sometimes have to push it several times to turn the car on or off.

Traction....so 1st gear you just dont go full throttle. 2nd gear it scampers for grip but mostly hooks up, but sometimes you need to back off for a split second and then feed the power back on. I have brand new tyres but they are not the best out there (Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3) so with better tyres it would no doubt hook up better.

Interesting comment on the stop/start button, I had mine replaced under warranty a few years back as it was sometimes taking 5 minutes to start the car. ...and now its starting to get a bit iffy again. Is it easy to replace yourself ?...part from VW I assume.

Yes its pretty straightforward to install. Pull up the shifter surround trim, unplug the cable from the bottom of the start/stop button, push the button up to remove it (takes some force) and pop the new button in.

I bought my button from a place in Hong Kong called SparePal. They specialise in parts for Euro cars. It was about $160AUD incl international shipping and took about 10 days to get here (most of that time sitting in Sydney customs). Its a genuine VW part and made in England of all places. The local price for the button was nearly $400 which is ridiculous.

If you go Googling you need to make sure its the correct button for right hand drive cars.

My original button had a date stamp of 2015 on it so its pretty likely to be the original one fitted to the car.

My Mk7 GTI PP....turns out I cant resist the VAG.

Decided to try the low torque version of the IE stage 2 tune and im a happy chappy. Less torque (actually i think its more like less aggressive torque) means less wheelspin in 1st and 2nd gear, before it hooks up and takes off. Once moving along (3rd gear) it feels just as quick as the high torque tune.

Also fitted the new Bosch front disks on the weekend. Still going through the process of rubbing the paint off the disk faces. Very happy with these so far, quality looks good and they were cheap. The old disks were well and truly rusted onto the hubs and took some not so gentle persuasion with a hammer to remove, before I used a wire wheel on my drill to clean up the hubs and put some anti seize.

Brake disk part numbers (for GTI PP/Golf R):
    BD1566 fronts (340mm diameter)
    BD1166 rears (310mm diameter)

Will fit the rears in the next week or two when the mood strikes me.

Well my GTI has been immortalised in video form, this week I lent it to a friend of a friend who has recently started a YouTube channel reviewing cars for the 2nd hand market.

    Nice!
Great review. I think the caveat in all “performance” cars is that your hand will be in your pocket somewhat it’s the risk v reward equation at play and I’m not sure there’s an extremely reliable “performance” car in existence. Or you update/ upgrade at end of warranty if you’ve got the means.

Interesting thread even though I’m not a modder myself - my MY15 GTI Performance, well it’s actually my wife’s daily driver, is as stock as a rock and i intend to keep it that way. We've owned our Golf from new and it has about 83,000km on the clock.

A few general comments. Your car is an MY16 with the MIB2 6.5 inch infotainment system that includes Apple Carplay and Android Auto and the Keyless Start Stop. My May 2015 build MY15 still has the MIB1 with the 5.8 inch screen and no KESSY. The Panoramic Sunroof only became optional midway during the MY15 year and the DAP picked up blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert at the same time. As my signature alludes, my GTI has the leather, roof and Driver Assistance Package - all the boxes ticked! Dynaudio only became an option here on the Mk 7.5.

I watched the review, which I thought was a bit harsh, really. No rattling sunroof, peeling centre console or squeaking door handles on our GTI. However I have had two leaking water pumps and two leaking thermostat housings, which has meant four visits to our friendly VW dealer. The first three visits were under warranty and the last we had a long argument with VW Australia that meant we had to fork out 70% labour costs. Note that even though the water pump and thermostat housing appear to be the one unit, VW warranty deem it to be separate parts and will only replace the leaking part and not both parts. I believe there is now an aftermarket aluminum pump and housing available, similar to the Mk 6 aluminium unit. I’ll make sure I get one of those next time (and there will be a next time...)

Oh, the only other warranty issue was replacing a dead EFB battery. My wife, who has only owned Japanese cars before, is not impressed though she loves how the Golf drives. Me? Well, I’ve owned a few Alfa Romeos (still do) so I’m used to having the odd issue...

Wasn't aware of this - thanks for the info.

Turns out my GTI is fully optioned then as I have the sunroof, leather seats, blind spot/rear cross traffic alert, self parking feature, radar cruise. I thought I was just missing the Dynaudio but seems it wasnt an option at the time my car was purchased anyway.

Really interested in this aftermarket waterpump .... our TSI (same pump I've been told) at 3years and 2 months and 26K kms now have a leaking housing Its 2 months out of warranty so I will make some noise at VW but am very tempted to just fit a decent metal aftermarket part instead. Where did you hear about this?

Sorry Lucas for the thread hijack.

I have searched for the metal water pump previously and from what I can find its only available for the Gen 1 & 2 EA888, so may suit your Amarok - but not the Mk7 GTI/R engine. As far as I can find, its only plastic for the Mk7.

Its an aftermarket unit made by a company called Graf.
