    Audi's Diesel Engine's??

    Okay so I just bought a 2.0 5-cylinder Audi turbo diesel engine that's in a 83 Audi 5000. Bought the whole car as I understand the motor will be a direct bolt in swap for my 92 VW euro van to replace the broken 5 cylinder Audi gas that's in there now. I bought the whole car so I'll have all the available parts if so needed. I've done some reading on this diesel motor and since I'm going to be looking at rebuilding it anyway - I'm open to any advice or input on how best to increase the power output on this 5 cylinder engine. For the most part I'm thinking the usual tricks like intercooler, larger exhaust, but what else might I do as I'll have the thing apart anyway??
    Also - I've read that switching to a smaller turbo like the k14 will be a better choice as it will spool faster and have less drag and would be a better choice for the weight of this vehicle compared to the k26 that's on it now? And then of coarse I'm also wondering about the injection pump and what can be done if anything to increase the power outage??

    hey mate,

    i have a 1.9 aaz in my mk3 with a k14, and towing a trailer is pretty difficult because the turbo is so small.... it spools so crazily, that you just have high intake temps and engine warms up too much. ( i also have a big front mount IC).

    i'd be looking for something in between the k26 and the k14 - like the k24 or VW spec T3. the t3 and k24 are similarly sized turbo's and will spool much easier than the k26.... k26 just has a big compressor housing, but exhaust side will be same as k24.

    as to power, the vw IDI's are famously tuneable, and you wont have any trouble getting soem good numbers out of your audi 5 cyl version. the main thing is just to keep the boost up to it and keep the head on (get some arp or raceware studs). injector pump tweaks do the rest.

    a quick and efficient mod is putting on larger injector nozzles.
    look at kermatdi.com
    no use in playing with pump if the nozzles don't squirt optimally.
    They offer a more precise spray pattern giving you better burn and more power.

    injector nozzles make a big difference in the early TDI's, but its not quite the same with the earlier IDI diesels... the prechamber diesel requires a totally different spray pattern and relies on the prechamber shape for efficient burn, quite unlike a TDI.
