Its a diesel
I purchased second hand 2008 Passat TDI 125kw couple of weeks ago
I'm a bit annoyed by the noise level at idle
I had 99 V6 camry before this one and it had much quieter idle noise...
I actually measured it
Camry 1999 V6
36~37db
Passat 2008 TDI 125kw
48~50db
and Passat has really boomy exhaust noise at around 1500rpm...
Is this meant to be like this or is somthing wrong with mine?

Its a diesel
Further to the above post the PD engine is a tad on the noisy side as opposed to the new Common rail. Totally normal mate, im sure your wallet will thank you for having it compared to the camry

A similar injection diesel Camry( if one existed ) would be just as noisy. It's due to compression ignition and super high injection pressures giving your generally much less powerful diesel engine similar performance to a V6 camry. If you wanted quiet idle, you should have gone the petrol version. Also, you shold be avoiding less than 1800rpm, where the engine is "off" boost, and thus producing a lot of DPF - exhaust particulate filter - clogging soot in the exhaust. Leave the DSG to do it's thing, or keep the thing around 2000rpm and above. I often drive in 3rd at 50 - 60kph in my similarly engined GT TDI for that very reason. You'll get better fuel economy too.

As Greg R said, don't be afraid to give it some stick, the diesels love it ♥ and unlike the V6 Camry you had (given the same treatment) you won't be back at the servo refueling after an hour or so either. I also have a Golf GT TDI (125kw) and and even with a damn good fanging every now and then I'm still getting nearly 900 K's to the tank and I never let the fuel level get too low. Over 1000 k's a tank on a trip would be easily obtainable. Congrats on the purchase by the way and hope you enjoy it :>)
