Have you confirmed that the fuel pump is still working correctly?
Could be crap stuck in the pickup.. You can get to it under the rear seats. There's an inspection cover you have to remove first where the sender unit is located..![]()
Hello all
(well maybe not all, once upon a time the diesel thread was almost exclusively mk1 content)
I have experienced an abrupt fuel supply issue. i first suspected the fuel filters and replaced them, then leaky fuel lines so I replaced them too. It seems as though there is a blockage somewhere in the fuel line between the tank and the filter. Has anyone had an experience like this and what did you do to fix it?

haha.... no you can't - its a diesel, the pickup is in the side of the tank at the bottom
hiho - you could have some larger debris in the tank that has blocked the supply line. The only think I can suggest is apply pressure to the feed line from the engine bay end and try to blow it back out.
Some part of my brain seems to recall my dad having a similar problem at some stage, but not 100% sure.

Thanks guys, you too Greg, at some stage i would like a TDI and will no doubt want more performance....
I inspected the fuel lines and the delivery line was dented at one location. I removed the line from the tank and back-flushed the line. I also fed a long piece of wire into the tank to dislodge anything blocking the outlet.
Then I discovered a method of priming the fuel line, filter and if you have a good set of lungs, the injector pump. Remove the return liine from the injector pump and blow into it. Ensure the fuel cap is in place. I managed to pressurise the tank enough for fuel to flow down the line to the injector pump (but not quite enough to prime it). Cranking the starter motor did the last bit.

I had the same problem on my 300td when I started to use bio diesel. I took the supply hose off the filter and blasted it with compressed air. To really stir up all the gunk. Bubbled it for a while then drained it from the tank. With the gas cap off. I don't know if the golf has a strainer in the tank or not. But on the merc u can just pull out the strainer and clean it. While the strainer was out I chucked a couple of liters of bio in there to wash out anything else. And never had a problem since
Hope this helps.

Its cool man, we know you're new to it
The diesel tank is quite similar to the GTI/fuel injected mk1 tank. I'm not sure if its the same. It did make the diesel tanks popular for a while for people wanting to do a more modern engine swap, but i think generally it doesnt matter all that much, people can just swap the lines to bigger or whatever. It was often bandied about that if you wanted to convert a petrol to diesel you would also need the tank and lines - but thats not really true either - we used the original petrol tank and lines when we did mollins '76 LS to TDI, and it worked just fine.
