    oil pressure STOP ENGINE!

    its a 2005 2L golf tdi
yesterday got in to go out and that was the warning when i tried to start it. got out and got in the other car...

so this morning i go and check the oil. level is fine. so i tried to start it again. same result. the car cranks over for a bit, no sign of starting then this warning comes on. no visible signs of anything being wrong. its due for a service which i will be doing this week(120,000kms)

anyone had this happen before? or got any ideas as to what the problem is?

    cheers

    hey,

don't know if because its having this error the ecu could prevent you from starting the engine, however causes of pressure loss are usually:

    oil pump failure
    massive oil leak
    *failure of pressure sensor*

anyone advise on the type of oil pump fitted to the 2.0l tdi and how it is driven?

went back out to double check things... oil was about half way (it had gone down a bit after the last cranking attempt.)

i topped it up (about .5L) and gave it another go (figuring that there was no evidence of any failure so i would try my luck.

this time it coughed just before the warning. then i tried it again. it started blew a ***** load of smoke due to the unburnt diesel in it from cranking.

so i put it down to the ecu thinking the car was running because it had been cranking for around 5-10seconds. and i guess it dont get proper oil pressure during crank. the warning went out the instant it started.

last time it was due for a service it was also having trouble starting when cold, not this bad but it has no garage anymore so it might be feeling the cold more.

after the service it was starting well again. so i guess the problem is the fuel filter.

can anyone confirm a starting problem as fuel filter?

otherwise i guess i will need to look at glow plugs or some such... unfortunately im no expert on diesel or with new cars...

Well, this car should start without any cough at minus 20-30degC, and if your car was serviced regularly the fuel filter should be cross out. I hope you start it when glow plug light goes off, I rather would suspect a fuel pump, pressure regulator or ignition system

completely out there, but is your car on a slope when doing this? i get this error when driving my bora when oil is getting low when i do a tight left corner, i was told its because the sensor is on the left side, so all the oil gets pushed to the right with the force of the left turn. good luck!

gldgti - yes the car is running fine. not 100% but it was like this last time it was due for a service... i have ordered filters and they will be arriving monday...

dylan8 - not on slope, only explanation i can come up with is that the ecu thinks the engine is running if you crank for over about 5sec without starting and cranking isnt enough to get the oil pressure up...

a fari assumption, but i'm not convinced. an oil pressure warning light/buzzer/etc is generally active below about 10psi - thats not a lot of oil pressure. in every vw i've owned that was in good working condition, the oil pressure light will go out after 3-4 seconds of cranking (if the engine wont start).

however, this is not to say this hasnt happened - but if you're cranking for ages and the oil light is still on, you may have some kind of supply issue.

PS - often a low oil level is enough to allow the pump to such enough air in with the oil to have trouble raising much pressure.

one more thing - what is your oil change interval???

im just servicing as per factory specs, so every 15k kms as that is roughly 6 months with this car i dont c that being a big issue.. im servicing it for its 120k next week, (delay on oil filter from where i get them...)

last service i also did the cam belt and idler + tensioner as well as the water pump...
