I've just bought a Mk1 diesel, and I'm wondering what is involved in fitting a 5 speed box and also a turbo. Are they easy to get off a Mk2? Would I have to get parts from Europe? Any ideas gratefully received

G'day and welcome, Sparkie. Nice to see you so enthusiatic about your diesel. We've already talked about putting a turbo on a 1.5 here http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/vwfo...r=asc&start=15
As for the 5 speed, the gearing in the diesel box is quite different to that in the petrol box. I've read on other forums that the GTi close ratio boxes do a good job. You would have to bring in a diesel box from the UK or SA or somewhere that used them. We didn't get them here. (Agreed, Syncro??)
A GTI gearbox wouldn't be any good because it doesn't have an overdrive 5th gear (5th is almost the same as 4th on a 4 speed)
If ypu don't have a lot of hills the wide ratio petrol 5 speed wouldn't hurt.
Or you could put your diesel crown wheel and p in a normal 5 speed. Not that hard really.
I'd go wide ratio and get lots of mpg.
Why not bring in a 1.9TDI and 5 speed?
